Blick-um, blick-um...
I normally set up left handed and all the other drummers I know set up righty, so I finally decided to set up the kit more symmetrically. It took some time getting used to but it's worth it - dual slave pedal, two hats, two rides two floor toms, etc. I'm still tweaking but I'm getting close.

The cool thing is now I don't have to rearrange the kit all bleepin' time. The big bonus is I'm playing a lot more now and really getting the opportunity to build my right side.

It's pretty cool what you can do with all the advances in drum hardware these days.

One more pic for those who like it a lil blurry

Wish I had the tripod for this shot.

Since you play primarily left-handed, it looks like it might be a little difficult to reach your floor tom on your left due to the high-hat having to be in the way (from my perspective at least. I can't tell from the angle (you should take one from behind the kit) but it looks like your right floor tom is a little hard to reach for the same reasons. I guess there's not really much of a way around this.

I looks good though, great strategy!

What I used to do to practise playing left-handed (I play right-handed) is what probably a lot of drummers do. I would have a double-pedal set up on the kick drum. I would have an auxillary snare to the left of my hats and a second pair of hats (on a regular hat stand, not x-hat or hydraulic or anything) to the left of my Aux. snare. Then to the left of the second pair of hats, I'd have a floor tom. This way I could just swing around and have my right foot on the kick drum pedal (but it would be on the left pedal) and have my left foot on the second hi-hat. The AUx. snare would be between my legs and I'd have the floor tom to the left of me (as opposed to the right) and highest tom on the right of me.

Now, the above setup was just to switch it up for my hands, mind you. Another cool thing I always thought of doing was to keep my setup right-handed, and still sit in the same spot, but put a floor tom to my left, use the left kick pedal with my left foot, and setup an Aux. hydraulic hi-hat pedal to the right of my right kick pedal use use my right foot on it. However, the Aux hats themselves would be to the left of my main hats (also on left) so I could hit them primarily with my left hand.

Sorry...I should avoid taking crack before the next time I answer a post. It makes me ramble. Also I think I'm sub-consciously making up for no one else posting anything on this thread.

Cheers

Thanks RecMstr - I was wondering why nobody responded too. Oh well. I do understand what you were explaining with different set-ups. I tried to get a shot from behind the kit but there's no way to fit it all in one pic (too close to back wall + too low of a ceiling).

So far all the players who've tried it have been pretty comfortable. The floor toms are closer in than they look but it is a bit tricky doing traditional rolls around the toms - you do have to jump over the hi-hats. I've found if I lower the hi-hats it's fine. But then the hats are too low for crossing over and you have to play open-handed like Billy Cobham.

I was thinking of trying a method similar to the one you mentioned above - I wanted to place the floor tom in the center (right in front of the bass drum where the main snare is now). I thought that made more sense sonically too - the kick would resonate the floor tom rather than rattle the snares. But I just didn't have the room, limited to single pedals (unless you swing your leg over and have the floor tom in front of you), and either way you would face a wall and away from the other players in the room.

I really like the fact that different set ups make you think and play differently. Thanks for your post.

looks cool as hell mister.....

I reckon it wouldn't take much gett around the hihat for the floor tom either

now I'll just fly over for a quick shot...:D

Very nice setup you've got there. I'm particularly a fan of the dual hi hats and floor toms. They balance out the kit nicely. What cymbals are you using?
