Lasting crashes?

How do you hit the cymbal correctly so it doesn't crack exactly?

Loose grip and follow through the cymbal. Let the rebound happen naturally, don't force the rebound to happen. Practice.
Not sure this is the kind of thing that can be accurately described through text.

Also, don't ride on a splash with a marching snare stick.

If you're willing to buy cymbols, why don't you buy a whole kit, and teach somebody else to play drums? :D

Seriously, this guy has no idea how to play, (or get a job, or manage his life), so unless you fire him, you may as well buy the cheapest used cymbols you can find on craigslist, and keep a drill in the rehearsal space.

That first one explains why I haven't cracked any yet. My technique sucks, I'm sure, but my cymbals are slanted in such a way that I naturally hit it almost right.

My advice would be to look at the drummer and watch the angle at which his sticks hit the cymbals. Then tilt the cymbals until they're hitting close to straight down on them. Finally, rotate the drummer slightly so that he hits the side of the cymbal and not the leading edge. :D

Remember: it is often easier to move the set than to teach a drummer. :D Kidding!

I wouldn't buy them in the first place. Tell him to straighten up and buy his own stuff or he is gone. Second, he is not taking care of cymbals that you were kind enought to buy. Not cool. You're a cool guy for doing that, but sounds like this guy wants others to take care of his needs. He needs to grow up.
