Hi people,

this could be my last submission for a while. I've not been around the forum much lately since I've been busy writing my thesis. It's actually getting pritty close to being finished but I now have other problems... I'll be packing up my computer and recording gear soon and moving to Bristol UK to start a new job in September. Exciting times.

Anyway, regarding the song. I posted this over a month ago as a raw version. It's now had the full "production" treatment and has bass, harmonies and drums added. With all the submixes and multiple takes I ended up with about 1 GB of sound files (16bit 44.1k) my biggest project yet, I stretched cubase to 25 tracks (managed to confuse it a few times too !!) which is also a record for me. Thanks to people on this forum I think I'm getting better at this ?? As always comments or suggestions are most appreciated.

Cheers
David

"Faithfulness Mk II" (second from top)

Five stars all round ? Somebody has too much spare time I think.

Could this be too dry? I don't get a real blending of the parts. Some reverb might help. Sounds like you tracked everything ok.

None of the tracks are gelled together bro.Everything sounds like they are in different rooms being recorded by a single mic laid out in the middle of all that.LOL....I dont know how better to describe it other than that.Remix time?

Thanks Kramer and ashulman. I think I know what you mean ... I've had a lot of trouble mixing this and I agree that it probably is too dry now. The problem is I can only externally mix 8 tracks at once so I've had to do submixes. Bummer

I hope I get time to remix this before I leave.

Thanks anyway

you know what i think you could add to this? I'm thinking someone who can play a mean harmonica would really fit on this.. Dunno why it struck me but i kept hearing it.

I like the blues and yet rock and yet bluesrock feel. I liked hearing those voices talking in the background they made me laugh. I don't know what they are saying but the voice was funny.

Ohhh... nice breakdown at 2:30 yeah my favorite part so far, hey good lead. The second half of this song is pretty interesting. Good job keeping the Groove alive. I don't have a problem with the way you mixed this.

Good call ! Yes it could really do with some screaming harp ... even though the mix is already pritty full. I agree, it would fit well. [Hey muzeman, are you reading this ? hint hint]

That's my friend Peter with the silly voice ... I got him to do some harmonies and then in the middle of the second verse some Monty Pythonish voices just popped out of him... it kind of surprised us both !! I think it adds interest ... glad you like it.

All the guitar is my friend Peter on this one. I'll just spliced his jam sessions together :D. Glad you like the mix. 1 vote for and 2 against so far.

Thanks for commenting. I've been away from the forum so long I thought I wasn't going to get any responses.

I enjoyed the tune. Good writing as usual. The instruments are all good, but like's been said, they are distinct but not quite melded yet across the board. I hope to get to hear the remix on this. Good luck on the new job. and on the move. We expect to hear from you when you get settled. :)

Nice playing and arrangement. Cool song.
I'm wondering if it's the panning that's keeping the tracks from blending. It sounds like everything is panned hard.
The bass could be used more as an anchor for the other parts to blend around. The guitars might be too loud to let it do that.

I hope you get time to mix this 'cause you're off to a good start.

Thanks Toki987 and fprod. I will get round to remixing this but I'm losing my monitors to a "baby sitter" tonight ! I'll have a go with phones but that's kinda what got me into trouble in the first place.

I tried to use one of those stereo widening tools... trouble is I only applied it to a submix of the instruments and I guess it really shows. I guess these tools should only be used once, and then only on the entire mix ?

I did add a little verb but there's some things you can't fix with verb I spose. Adding more just seemed to make it sound muddy.

Another good reason to remix is the EQ on the instrumental submix was screwed up because I used phones to mix..... in fact it happened twice with 2 different phones at different stages which turned out to have vastly different frequency responses. I know I know .. mixing on phones is a big no no. I've learned my lesson !

Unfortunately there's no chance of mixing on my monitors again before I go. But I might have another very tentative attempt to mix on my better phones on the weekend.

Thanks for the advice ... I had fooled myself this one was OK but the comments are spot on.

Cheers
David
