Hi everybody,

my mate has a telecaster and the laquer on the body has begun to crack, gradually getting bigger over the past few weeks,

What he wants to know is it going to affect the guitar in any way?

Its right where the neck is fixed

Thanks in advance

Aaron

Without seeing it, I don't know. The best thing to do is take it to a good repair shop so they can see it. I would normally assume that this was just some weather checking, but the location of it brings up two other possibilities. If it is cracking from a corner of the neck pocket, then it could be that the finish is on too thick (common with factory instruments), and has a stress point in that corner. This is a purely cosmetic issue. But it could also be that the neck pocket is too tight, and you are starting to see a wood crack. This is unlikely, but you should still take it to a good repair shop and have it looked at. The most likely thing, though, is that the guitar got too cold, and then warmed up too fast, and the difference in expansion rates between the finish and the wood caused the finish to crack.
