How would people rate the Kurzweil PC2R Rack module? I am interested in some pure good quality sounds albeit simple and natural or synthy. Most of the work that I do is in the arena of R&B and NeoSoul. Would any second a recommendation for this module for basic instruments (i.e. keys, guitars, bass, etc...)?

I recently picked one up used and I like it so far ...

Only really have had time to preview the sounds, get familiar with the front panel. I haven't edited/programmed any of my own sounds yet.

This is a good module if you want realistic and traditional stuff ... nice pads, nice variety of keyboard-instrument sounds ... as far as "real" instruments, the piano, strings, horns are very good. It has some lead synth sounds that I think I can put to use. It also has "doo daa" and "ooh aah" voices and guitar samples, which won't be of use to me. The bass sounds and drum kits in it are reasonable, if you must use a keyboard for that; I'm very much into the real thing for stuff like that and guitars, so consider the source.

For me, the KB3 organ emulation ain't happening, but it's better than some others I've heard. But, I have a Nord Electro which does the organ/leslie very well, I think. The Nord is also the reason why I won't be turning to the PC2 for Rhodes or Wurly sounds (although, the PC2 does not do a *bad* job on these sounds, they just don't have the grit and bite that I feel the Nord does a better job of in terms of approaching the original instruments). However, if I want that DX7-y keys sound, the PC2 has some nice ones of those.

It's got a lot of onboard effects that seem very programmable ... haven't dug that deep into yet.

I just read this over and it sounds like I don't like a lot of the sounds ... I don't want to give that impression! Depends on what you're asking of it. For me, the piano, strings, pads, horns, some percussion sounds, etc. are among the best I've heard recently. It doesn't do anything in the presets terribly. It's very good for "natural", which seems to be what you want. Roland tends to have a hype to their sounds. I never cared for Alesis QS sounds ... the only other soundset I've heard recently in this genre that interests me as much (and for some things, even more) is the Yamaha Motif/S series sound set. I'd say go to a store that deals Kurzweil, put on a pair of headphones, and play a PC2 to really decide.

But overall, I'm a happy camper ...

Does this help?

most cetainly...

helps a great deal. I had no direction and the only certainty I had was that I wanted to try a Kurzweil product. Most heralded for quality but least talked about among current production debates. Just curious to know about users who can personally attest to its attention to detail in achieving almost natural sound quality.

Thanks much for the tidbits....

Awesome module. I have owned so many others for years. When I recorded with the PC2R, I realized that I never HAD a synth before. It really is that good. You do have to get used to it and learn how to use it. I did a quick cover of "The Long and Winding Road" The whole recording is stunning. The bass sounds are great too. A good purchase.

Iv'e been looking at one myself.

They are now being sold with the Orchestral ROM Block installed.
Makes a Huge difference.

You can hear the demo's here, especially the last one-

I have a Micro Piano, sounds good, but this is the real deal if you want realistic strings, horns, ect.
A pro unit.

Muzeman, I don't have the orchestral ROM installed ... can you tell me what strengths you think that block adds to the core sounds? Just more choices of individual strings/horns etc, or better sounds of the same programs, or better sounds that are different, or ...?

Thanks.
