KRK Ref Monitors...Buzz City?

MoonMix Studios
Crew...

Have been attempting to master my CD with a pair of KRK Rockit 8's; & have been pulling the ol' hair out with my vocals. The vox are too dull; & every attempt at high-end EQ creates a buzz...regardless of quality of plug-in or curve utilized. Any kind of stiff attack or burst in the lyric content; & its buzz city. Any kind of (even close to) overmodulation or harmonic distortion; & I get that scratchy, scrapey flavor.

[I've also posted in these boards in other categories looking elsewhere for a solution; & have been helped by members quite a bit, but to no avail.]

Then, the other day...I ripped a few songs from favorite CD's past & listened to those thru the KRK's. I can hear every damn buzzy burst & harmonic distortion scrape in every vocal line !!!

So...my question is...are these things too accurate...or do they not handle certain signal characteristics well...as a manufacturer?

I believe in the theory of nearfields (what you hear is what you get); & that when, your mix sounds good on them...it will sound real good on everything else...

...but, come on...

...I can't make anything sound good on these things. They say nearfields have to be “learned”, but I can't judge correctly with these monitors; & I don't have time to burn CD's & then run around & audition tunes on every kind of system...come back...tweak, etc., etc., etc.

Does anybody else out there own this model? Could use some input.

Thanks,

I have been going through the same thing. Check the quality of your cables and make sure the connections are good and tight.

Monitors in general. I have not used KRK's. Alesis, Wharfedale,Event, yes.

Maybe the signal is distorting? Maybe when the vocal is punching through like that it's overloading your system somewhere. The distortion is not necessarily coming from your monitors, it could be happening before the monitors and the monitors are faithfully reproducing it.

Check the levels of your tracks in the software and if the vocal is even approaching "0" back it off. Take it down so the peaks are not above -6 and then see what happens, assuming the levels are that hot.

I have a a pair of the KRK Rockit 8's.....decent monitors for the price.....I have had no problems with mine......Mabye try running a pair of home speakers from the same signal chain and see if they do the same thing....or hook up you krk's to your home stereo and see if they do the same thing.........good luck

i think your first post above is "why" they started using Nearfields, interesting and yeah its hard, how much time do people spend listeningin to thier mix in some average room or car and then re-adjust the mix, then pete and repeat jumped off a bridge who was left?

I've heard the RP8 several times and never thought them to be "severly harsh".

try an RTA graph maybe you have something else going on in your room, as all your playbacks have the same sound and you don't like your mixes.
just an idea?
