what does everyone think about the ST6's or the ST8's? compared to the other monitors under 500. say, the BX8's? Are they good for anything in particular? thanks for the help

Yo Bear:

Out of curiosity and a constant urge to upgrade my gear, how much better are the KRK passives, [what model?] than my Yorkvilles?

Been thinking about an upgrade and am considering KRKs.

Green Hornet:D :p

GH......

The KRKs are apples/oranges to the Yorkvilles..... the KRK having tending toward a more forward, present sound, whereas as the Yorkies don't have a "punchy" type of sounds at all......

I also think the KRKs will give you a deeper low-end response, so they'll tend to sound "bigger"......

While the Yorkies are quite decent - especially for the price - they do tend to sound slightly boxy.

ok....here's MY delimea.
I am willing to spen 500 on monitoring. here's my choices as i think and tell me what you think.

1. BX8's
2. BX5's with the $200 samson subwoofer.
3. ST6's with a power amp
4. ST8's with a power amp

I would go with the ST8's
However, the BX8's are pretty good as well....getting good reviews.

well, if i went with a pair of ST8's. how good of a power amp would i need? price range maybe?

Personally, I wouldn't use anything less than the Hafler P-series......

A P3000 is an excellent choice.

well....thats kind of out of my price range. the amp alone is more than i am willing to spend. so, i guess i just want to know weather a cheper amp...around 250 or 300...would work. or, weather i should go with the bx8s

The BX8's are powered, so if your budget is slim that may be the way to go. I have listened to those at GC and there pretty awesome for the price.

yeah, thats kind of what im thinking at the moment. but, i just dont want to pass up getting some awesome monitors like KRK'S. do you think they would be alright with a power amp such as the alesis RA300 and the samson Servo260. they are both over the wattage for the ST8's which is 100w. im not sure if thats how you measure tho.

I've never used passive's so I cant provide adequate info on that...perhaps bluebear will chime back in. I think he suggested the Hafler's because there pretty much top of the line.
Now I did have a pair of KRK V6's powered and they rocked;)

You'd be better off with with the more budget-oriented Hafler T-series, than any Alesis or Samson amp........

cool. thanks man for the help. i just have one more question. if you had 500 bucks. and had the option of getting the m-audio bx8s. or getting the KRK ST8's with the hafler TA1600. which one would you get? these are my first set of monitors

I know (and like!) the KRKs... so I would likely go with the Hafler/KRK combination.

Although there are those whose ears I trust that say the M-Audio's are decent enough. (I haven't heard the BX8s myself...)

yeah, i have listened to alot of monitors at guitar center. but, thats it. the KRK monitors (although they were the models over $1500 each) were some of the clearest monitors ever. but, now i am realizing if i get the hafler amp. i am opening up a whole new can of worms of things i can get. the 20/20's, the reveals, ect...all for 500.

awesome dogfish. i think i agree. dont i know you dogfish? aren't you in that band with the really bad ass drummer? heh

Hahaha. I don't know. I am in a band with a shitty singer though.
Going the passive route has the added advantage of being able to purchase other reference monitors to use to cross check your mixes with, without having to purchase the power amps inside of active monitors.

i agree. but, i need some feed back on the st8's before i go out and buy them. i would like to be able to hear them too. b/c i am just shooting in the dark b/c i know that krk is good. so, anyone tried them?
