I am looking at either getting the Korg D12 or the Tascam 788.

IMHO... Go with the Korg
I have a D1600, and it's just on another level. I suppose it depends most on what you are going to do with it, and what your ears like to hear. When I bought the D1600, only Akai and Yamaha seemed to be anywhere near the same quality. I felt like the Korg beat out the Akai, and the Yamaha was just too rich for me. Good luck.
