Hail sound gurus,
Boy, am I impressed with all the happiness going on in this place. There are a lot of cool people giving a lot of great advice here.
Anyways, I've been doing some bits and ends recording out of my house for a little while, just personal stuff, using an ADAT. But I've been looking into the computer recording stuff and thinking about expanding to record some bands and local talent. I could use some advice.
I've been checking out the Pro Tools LE stuff (with the Digi 001). I've heard a lot of people say that if you're going to go Pro Tools you need a Mac (which I have a 400mhz PC). But I checked out the Digidesign site and they seem to have a version that will run off of windows 98. Is anyone familiar with how well this version works? Or what specs it will actually run from (for instance, their site recommends using a Blue and White Mac, but I've been told that Pro Tools actually runs better on the beige version). I'm trying to decide here whether to buy a Mac or if I should just upgrade my PC (which has a K6 processor - whatever that is).
Another option I was looking into was the MOTU 2408 mkII. I understand that their software is for Macs (which makes me feel like I would waste a portion of my money on something I didn't need), but the unit will operate off of PC programs. I have Cakewalk Pro Audio 7 (which I purchased for really cheap in passing and never got a sound card for the computer) that I can upgrade to 9 for $80 or so. But I'll still have to upgrade the effects and stuff which is extra cash. What will Pro Tools do that Cakewalk won't be able to do? Also, what is the differance between the mkII and the origonal 2408?
I'd like my recording upgrading to have a professional edge to it as far as mastering capabilities, multiple mic recording capabilities (8 at once would be enough), and all that good stuff. Do you guys have any advice as far as what I've said? What would you do given the situation?
Sorry this is so long, but I've had a lot of questions for a while. Thanks in advance for any good advice you can throw my direction.

hey misterqcue,
At the moment I don't have a sound card for my computer (besides the cheap thing that came with it). That's kinda why I've been looking at the 2408 and the Digi 001. I did visit those sites already just to glance them over, but I guess what I'm looking for are some semi-experienced opinions between the products and some recommendations.

thanks - D Wright
