im tempted to drive there with foam i got from foambymail (foam factory) to compare. im curious to see how similar the products are. I used foambymail to cover my entire iso booth. it works but im sure some REAL foam woulda worked much better. i guess i had to learn the hard way. foamforu is only about an hour away from where i live. definitely let us know what kind of product you receive.

What you guys are saying about the foam is about what I was thinking... When I first put my quote that I got up on there, with everything I was using, the first thing you guys said was sounds like a little bit of overkill... my thinking is that at this price, I might need to have a little more than I would of the name brand auralex... At such a low price for everything, I'm still going to try it, and that way I can at least share the knowledge of what I think and maybe help out others in making a decent decisino on this... Yes I'll be the guinea pig this time!!!

On a side note, while I'm waiting on my foam, I built my first of 4 quadratic diffusers for my back wall of my soon to be studio... Each one will be 2' x 2'. I'm going to put four of these in a square pattern in the center (both vertically and horizontally) of my back wall, thus creating a 4' x 4' square. I also purchase my recording console at Guitar center... Got a Tascam 2488mkII, hich I figure should give me some cool sounds for my first studio effort. Once I finish my quadratic diffusers, and hang the foam I've ordered, I'll be psoting lots of before and after pics. I'll also have pics of the desk I'm building, as well as some instructions on the DIY stuff I am doing for this project.

So far, here's what I've spent on this studio...
641.99 + and old Peavey T60 electric guitar for my Tascam 2488mkII
41.51 at home depot for wood and glue for the first two diffusers.
120 for the foam I ordered.
Free - Wood to build my entire desk setup, as well as to board up my windows.

My next big purchase at guitar center is going to be for my monitors, cables, and a few mics to get me started. I may have to start a poll soon for mic recommendations for what i'm doing.

Odd. My control room has no foam and no diffusors, yet I'd bet it's flatter than more than 99% of people's CR's posting on this bbs.

What am I doing wrong?

do you have a lava lamp?
because that might explain a lot.

Ahhhhhhhhh. So, they are all buying foam to help with the light reflections from the lava lamp. That makes sense. I couldn't figure out why anyone would be using it for audio. :D

How are you measuring your response? That's my guess. If you have a "normal" size room with no treatment, and especially no bass traps, your room probably has more like a 30 dB spread.

Ethan,

I think you missed the sarcasm. My CR has no parrallel walls, tons of 703 - but no foam, no diffusers. It is pretty flat. I don't get all the hype about foam. Maybe I should start selling it.

I bought foambymail once. I only use a little bit of it, not even for recording, because it doesnt do much at all, waste of money for serious sound stuff. Works great with my stereo and tv though, really helps for that, as far as studio use, worthless. 703 really works. Now I have piles of unused foam, and don't know what to do. I should just put it all on craigslist, but I can't really advertise it as studio foam!

So I got my foam in the mail on Wednesday... I spent about 5 hours to get everything installed and to my liking. The flutter echo in the room was greatly reduced. I tested this before and after mainly with clapping around the room. The bass absorbtion was definitely helped some. Not a ton, but it helped a little bit. I was going to add a few 703 or 705 absorbers in the corners, but I think I'm going to stick with my foam I dea, and by like 4 or 6 lenrd traps. I also built an isolation chamber for my guitar amp as I prefer a really dry sound with more post recording effects rather than getting a really wet sound from the get go. I'll be posting pics of my room in the next few days.

I will say one thing though... I missed work because of this foam!!!!
I spent like I said about 4 or 5 hours installing the foam with the door shut (because of my abnoxious cats)... I didn't realize how bad the fumees were from the spray adhesive, but as soon as I finished and stepped outside the room, all I could smell was the adhesive as it was all into my nose and my sinuses... I spent about 8 hours of yesterday throwing up at home and not being able to lift my head up, hower, or even eat.... go figure!! Foam looks really good though!
