i was just wondering if anyone could explain to me why some people throw a blanket or some kind of duvet over the kik drum, forming a tunnel at the front of the drum. and where do you place the mic when you use this kind of set-up? i've seen it on loads of pictures and videos and have tried to find out how this helps but have had no luck yet.

any thoughts?

thanks

It helps contain some of the low end and also helps keep the cymbals out of the kick drum mic.

The tunnel is the way to go. If you make it about 36" long, you can really get some good isolation out of it, but it has to be a bit thick, not just 1 thin blanket.. you need quilted shipping blankets like professional moving companies use.
You can get them from http://www.Markertek.com for about $20 each.

And it helps to add a second mic in front of the kick, outside of the blanket. Inside mic picks up attack, outside picks up the boom.

now i understand. i think i'm gonna try the two mic technique tonight. could do with a little more oomph on my kik drum track.

thanks very much
