Ok It's tax time and that means a nice return for me :D

I'm getting quite sick of just shoving a sm57 into a bass drum to record and want to get something with a little more punch.

I've been reading up on mics and have decided uppon the following

Shure BETA52
AKG D112
Sennheiser E602 (would have to ship from america but that's ok)
I see these mics are the most common

There is a pack HERE that I found on ebay and thought to myself shit 4 mics. Now any idea if any of these are good? or am I just buying a "drum pack" which genrally suck.

Thanks for your help.

That seems like an odd combination of mics for a package deal. There are no overheads, four dynamics, but it's two each of two different types. I'd think if you were going to have multiple varieties of mic, you'd want one type for snare, a different type for all your toms... which would be three and one (or four and one, depending on your kit), not two and two.... Weird.

Anyway, probably something like that would work well if you added a D112 and a pair of SDCs for overheads. That said, I don't know those particular mics, so I'm mostly basing that opinion on AT's reputation....

Superlux FK-2 is a great inexpensive kick mic that holds its own against other name brand mics exceptionally well. $37 on eBay. I support them so much I'm suprized they haven't offered me a deal yet.

I get awesome results with just a felt beater with a one gallon paint can in the shell in combo with an 8" subkick mic.

I use a Shure SM-7 to record bass drum. And bass guitar. And vocals if they're heavy/metal-y. Otherwise I'd go for the D112

Phill I believe you've conned me into it, let's just see if anyone will send it to australia, I may also pick up a sm7. Man having a studio (or whatever you wana call it) is expensive I've allready dropped like $3000AUS on mine and i know that's small pickin's compard to what some of you guys have spent.

What can I sayt I'm a gear slut

OK fellas I have one more quick question

IO allready have a pair of JM27'S for overheads so you don't have to worry about them but i was wondering what are the other Superlux mics like there's a pack on ebay HERE and I was thinking I could always use some extra microphones. But I'd only buy them if I'd use them has anyone had any experiance with them?

Thanks

usually, you get what you pay for.

Quite aware but with phill preaching how good the kick is, I thought it may be neccacary to ask if I should throw out the extra for a few more mics.

Opinions.

ps. giraffe I thank you for yours i know thats genrally the case

I have a D112 and an Audix D6, and since I've got the D6, i've barely touched the D112...the Audix seems to sound badass no matter where you stick the damn thing near a bass drum.

I've been patial to the beta 52. I also have d112's, they don't sound the same, but I can use them interchangably.

COuld you guys please post some samples of these mics

I've been looking at the D6 and I can get one for about $300AUS but I'd like to AB it with the superlux.

I know you guys are using differant pre's and kits but It should give me a general idea.

Thank you

I pick from these three in my locker... D112 and D6 and ATM25

D112 - more thuddy and mids

D6 - Scooped with a click doen't require a lot of EQ for that thud-click

ATM25 - (memory recall) kind of between the D112 and D6

Here's how I'd use my three
D6 - Metal or heavy rock
d112 or ATM25 - More classic rock or Country...

Dwarf asked me to post some samples so you can hear the Superlux FK-2.

Here are several undone clips. They will be finished soon, but these are the rough tracks, so some sound like crap. The newer tracks do NOT sound like these, but I can't post them. I made a rule. Damn rules! I wish I wasn't such a slave driving bastard!

There is NO EQ on any of these tracks. It's all mike placement and balance. Yes, there are some effects! If you don't like effects, too bad! I do like effects and they're my tracks! I also add a homebuilt subkick, but it's just barely blended in with the main kick mic. Snare and toms are GLS-ES57s. Overheads are MXL V63's on some and 603's on others.

Here we go:

The last one you might have to copy down to play since it's an MP4.

Questions comment and critisms are expected. I may not get to answer them in a timely fashion, but I'll try.

Remember the kick mic is one I bought on eBay for $37.

Have fun...

I agree with Farview. I think that the Beta 52 is a great mic. To me, it and the D112 will be your two best choices.

of the three that I have D6, D112, ATM25 what would a Beta 52 add?

thanks,
kp-

I've heard em before and I still think they sound good, $37 mic or not. Every time I see one of those Fuck2 mics (that's how it lives in my head), I think of Philgood. :D

Of those you listed, I'd probably go with the D112, but someone mentioned Superlux, and though I haven't used the 'Fuck-2' model, I have used their PRA-218B for kick and it 'kicks' ass!

No EQ, and placement is NOT particular at all...try on out...
..and BTW, I have NO connection with any of the dealers, etc.

you guys have anything recorded using the pra-218b? i'm kind of curious as to what they sound like.

nevermind, i'm blind. :D
