DJL, Don, ever tried a M201 in a kick? Very tight sound with a nice click and as usual very little bleed.
No, I can't say that I have... but I like the M201 on snare. Sometimes I use 2 to 3 mics on kick with a tunnel made out of blankets. Thanks for the M201 kick tip.

I only ever spend a lot of time experimenting with mics on my own.
We do it a little differently here.

Really? You experiment with different mics while the drummer is playing his song?

I've never gone looking for a "magic formula" myself. That would bore me to tears.

Cheers,

Johann

Not exactly, but while the drummer is setting up, I'll be in the room listening and watching. After a few minutes, I'll have a pretty good idea of his patterns and what mics I think will give him the right sound, and where to place them to keep them out of his way.

I'll record a minute or so of him playing, then have him come in and listen to see if I got it right. At that point, I'll futz with eq, or change out (or move) a few mics (to get me closer without using eq).

At the end of the song, I'll have him lay down eight solid hits on each tom, the snare, and the kick, in case I hafta do any "after the fact" eq or level tweaking on the drums.

i use sennheiser md 425! it is vocal mic more for live preformance but it kicks ass on the snare and kick! i had akg d12 and it is really not the mach for sennheiser!
