yes, them hip-hopper's call there thingy ma jigs "beats". that would include the drums, bass, pads, synth lines, instrument samples, etc. that's what i was originally trying to get across. arranging all that stuff requires a good ear and sense of style and i think piano would help in developing that.

well then i'd have to agree with you :D.... it's not just a beat godammit!

true...In united states when someone refers to a making beats they are refering to making an instrumental...drums and keys, and pads,strings/synth...

i'd just like to re-write your statement a little more accurately:

In united states when someone refers to a making beats for hip-hop/r&b they are refering to making an instrumental...drums and keys, and pads,strings/synth...

when other artists in my crowd talk about "beats" we're only talking about the drums. same with rock, metal and whatnot.

and just to be nitpicky, when referring to drums, bass, guitar, piano/synth together, it's properly called "the rhythm", as in "the rhythm section" of a jazz ensemble.

true......or an arrangement..I agree that the terminology is used wrong in hip hop on more then one instance....but instead of trying to educate the dont knows...its better to just go with the flow and continue the incorrect labels...

Figures.

That's probably your attitude toward life in general.

My goodness! Where the heck is the love guys? :D One mans beat is another mans rhythm. So what? Lets all just shut up and make good quality music so we can get this mainstream crap off the the airwaves. :D

Seriously, i've always heard most rappers refer to the musical arrangment for hip hop as beats. Different genres of music have different terms for things, whether they be wrong or right is in the eye of the beholder. When it all boils down, terminology is meaningless. It's all about the quality of the music. That's what matters.

not always the case..but as i get older..Im 36..Id rather go with the flow...i dont need the aggravation

I agree with both of you.

Learning any instrument will help you write music. Learning musical theroy will help you write music.

I've seen people with great ears and no musical training who can make good beats, but I've also seen professional musicians with great ears who can make great beats.
