Keeping Snare Bleed out of Kick Mic

big country said:
dude you can also use a pad to lower the volume so the crap around you isnt as loud .a person who knows alot about micing drums will tell you to pad every drum mic to stop bleed that way it is also easyer to gate. trust me it works.
also a pad is good to use when you have real high SPLs
when I mic my kick some times I will pad it because the air blowing out makes
a crapy sound

No you can't. The Pad lowers the whole volume of the mic, it doesn't selectively lower things that are farther away and leave what is up close at the same level. The Pad is just a small "Resistance circuit" - either on the board, on the mic, or in between the board and the mic.

Whn you are padding the kick mic, you are lowering the sensitivity of the mic, that is why the wind on it doesn't effect it as bad - I would suggest you change your mic placement if you are having windburn on your kick mic.

If I've said it once, I'll say it a thouand times: Kick Drum Tunnel.

it fucking works! think think think.
its almost like a gate in a way but with the volume
IE. gateing the lower volumes
Ie. if the snare is two foot away from the kick its not going to be as loud as the kick therfore you would hear the snare less it makes the mick less sensitive.
think .

And when you pad the kick mic, the kick isn't going to be as loud in the kick mic either.

Stop lying man....i'm really starting to think this guy is putting us on about this whole thread. he cant be real. at first i thought wow this guy is really stupid....but then after the last three or four of his post, no one is THAT stupid to think we would believe the crap comming out his mouth. but lets just say you are THAT stupid, you dont even try, even after you lied and said you got strait A's (yeah i said strait, cuz thats how you spelled it) in college, to hit the edit button and try to correct your mispellings after we posted the correct way to spell, you continued to do it. then you go on to throw out some (i dont know if you meant it to be racist remark against Mexicans) but i think you are so stupid that you may not know that beaners is a racist word. or does that college you claim to go to stand planted in deep Alabama teach you that? look i didnt want to ever get into a thread where i would do something like this, but you man or should i say young child make me sick knowin you are trying really hard to represent the field of audio engineering.

when dealing with pros you do not need to explain every thing .why you ask because they know.
...
of course I will be a little more professional. I can learn to deal.
What you don't get - because you didn't do your homework first - is that you are dealing with pros right now. I myself built my first home studio when you were only 7 years old and have been a professional engineer (audio, video, and software engineer) in this industry since you were a stoner in high school. Farview is also a professional audio engineer; he has worked in broadcasting as well as in recording and has more knowledge and experience with recording drums than you and I put together, and has helped build professional mastering suites. Sillyhat has done work for major labels for a while now - as an engineer, not as a carpenter.

The fact is, you simply don't know quite as much as you think you do about audio engineering, and what fundamental stuff you do know you haven't done a very good job of communicating here. You're a white or a yellow belt trying to pick fights with brown and black belts when you should be trying to learn moves from them instead. You're right, this forum is a good training ground; consider this your first lesson: You'll never make it past carpenter to an engineer in the pros until you can recognize your place and use that to your advantage.

There are people in this forum that are 2nd and 3rd Dan black belts in engineering compared to my modest little brown belt that it took a quarter of a century to earn, and I have come to recognize that. I'm still learning things from them. The only way I can learn things from them is to understand that they have either more knowledge or experience than I, and when a situation comes where I might initially disagree with them, I resolve it by stating the points on accurate detail and then respectfully asking them if/where I have it wrong. But if I try butting heads with them, I will learn nothing except an easy way to get a badly bruised noggen.

So take my advice along with a couple of Excedrin and do your homework; before you defend a position to your death you had damn well better a) really know what you're talking about, b) be able to explain your position properly, and c) know who you're talking to before you make any assumptions as to their capabilities. Unless you like bumps on your noggin, of course. :)

what do you think im lying about?
I never once said thier was not smart people or seasond pros.
I just think some people need to check thier shoe sizes.
I really think some of you guys have real problems.

If you are a pro you should know how to use a pad and all its uses.
just because your a pro doesnt mean you know everything.
thier are people on this board who back me.they might not say it in public.

It's official, this guy is yanking your chains.....

(an allusion to another thread)

So does anyone think knowing music theory is useful for songwriting? or is it a waste of time?

Discuss it amongst yourselves..

Yeah, this guy is a cross between Edan (Mr. "Eddie Van Halen (i.e. God) and his 'No Music Theory Music Theory'") and Corbin (Mr. "Use reverb for EQ").

you want my teachers Email
and my old bosses phone #
if you dont belive that you would have a hard time beliveing all the other stuff I have done.
but who are you some guy who misspelled a porno address and stubled in here

What I want is for you to redeem yourself by explaining:

1. exactly how moving a D112 2" closer to the kick head and throwing a 10dB pad on it is going to get rid of the snare bleed problem without adversely affecting the sound of the kick itself.

2. how that method is possibly better than at least a half-dozen other methods including, but not limited to, re-tracking the kick, decreasing or eliminating the snare through the use of a dynamic range expander, and (the solution that actually worked for the OP) moving the mic *away* from both the beater and the snare, and not closer to them.

3. how it is that omnidirectional microphones have a longer "range" than directional microphones do.

4. how one could possibly recommend using the overheads to capture the kick's attack.

5. how somebody who can't even go one full sentence without four or five major vocabulary or grammatical errors that his neese...er...niece wouldn't even make on a bad day, and therefore couldn't submit a readable homework assignment to save their life, can brag about their college education.

6. how one can actually grow the big brass balls to stand alone with a college class and some limited experience working as a carpenter in a studio and tell four or five professionals from all over the world who have been doing this professionally for a living for more cumulative years than you've been alive, and are all in agreement with each other, that you are right and they are all wrong.

Let it go, Daniel-san. The longer you hang on to this untenable position, the worse you come out of it. Cut your losses and move on to the next thread.

Back to the original question, (which BTW, Big Country genuinely thought he was answering)....................it's easy.

Strip the batter and reso heads, and the snare wires off your snare, replace the batter head with a mesh head, fit a trigger and VOILA........no snare bleed to worry about :D :D

God, I kill myself sometimes :D :D :D

that would fix the problem ,
problem solved .
all that and 2000 neg points later here we are.
so who ever started this thread. go buy some new mesh heads and a trigger set
up.
I bet the fucks who neged me are so fuckin lame they just give each other points on a daily baisis.Id love to met them in person. I bet theyed change thier tone real quick.

I doubt it. It's probably a safe bet that you are an ignorant troll in real life as well. If you don't get your ass kicked on a daily basis, it's a fucking miracle.

yes I would love your teacher's email so I could explain what a horendous name you're giving that person with your obvious lack of the english language

aye I stuble everywhere I go......................untill I have a shave

& I would particularly like to meet you in person as I would take supreme delight in stripping you expertian knowledge to the core

& I don't think that would take long. In my ten years of constant learning about everything to do with studio I've never come across anybody as deluded as you. Also in that ten years I have learnt a lot of things recently by means of this forum via names like Southsideglen & Leerosario to name but 2 of the many that post on here

look at you fat fuckin tard.your probly a fag to by the looks of it.I probly weigh as much as you but it aint fat.I dont leather up with fags or chicks for that matter.

Its come down to this folks, who is the biggist lame on this board, will it be fruit cake, or will it be the un disputed dumb ass "slidey"
Its a close race.
well folks fruit cake enjoys his spare time in leather with other men.
as for slidey ,well he knows two people that are on this board,
Its a close race folks.
