JV1010 HELP!!!

Help, I've had my JV1010 for about 4 months and this morning something went awry. I've used it with ScoreWriter, Home Studio, Cubasis and Band in a Box with zero problems till today...Now here's the problem: I've always used the 1010 in patch mode, and generally work in ScoreWriter. Now all of a sudden the 1010 will only play one channel at time. For instance I have a 4 track piece, each on a different midi channel, with different patches. The piece starts on midi channel 2, and midi channel 1 comes in about 16 bars later. When I hit play, the midi light on the 1010 is blinking receiving, telling me the 1010 is recieving the midi info, but no sound. As soon as we get bar 17, I can hear channel 1 playing. The only way to hear channel 2 is to manually turn the part knob to channel 2, but then I lose the patch info. I've tried doing factory resets, to no avail. I've not had this problem at all before and am a little confused. Any help would be appreciated. thanks!
 
You need to have the JV 1010 in "Performance" mode to play multiple channels. I'm not sure why the other programs were allowing multimbrality (playing multiple channels simultaneously) but the right way to do this is in Performance mode as opposed to patch mode. When in Performance mode, just turn the channel knob to channel 1 and find the instrument that you want to use, then change to channel 2 and find the instrument. Repeat this for all channels.

jflagg, I have had that problem too.
What happens at times is if you play a general midi
song, the JV1010 stays in general midi mode and
wont work in performance mode, so just make sure
the little red light is next to performsnce
before you begin. As Rev E said, I also dont know
why it was working in patch mode, it shouldnt.

I wished they designed that a bit better,David
 
Thanks for the help, but I still think there is something wrong...It could very well have been that I was in performance mode before, but I haven't had to switch that around in the 4 months I've had it, so I don't really remember where I had it set. Let me explain the process a little better, and maybe we can find the problem. I'm using Cakwalk ScoreWriter, basic notation software, and I have a piece with 5 tracks. Track 1 & 2, are PRC-36 on channel 1. Track 3 is PRA-108 on channel 2. Track 4 is PRC-9 on channel 3 and track 5 is Sess78 on channel 4. Now this was playing fine through the 1010 two days ago, and I have made zero changes to the file. I followed your suggestion and put the 1010 in performance mode. I should also note that I am using the Patch definitions from the Roland .ins file to select my patches. When I playback the file I hear nothing, unless I crank the gain on my mixer, in which case barely audible below the line noise is the part that should be playing. However once it reaches the part where channel 1 & 3 kick in, channel 1 plays at normal level and channel 3 is at the same level as channel 2 was at (non audible). I've tried playing with the volume in the software. Perhaps the level needs to be set on the 1010 itself. But I haven't had any of these problems until yesterday. Also I've noticed that some songs in Band in a Box playback with different patches then they normally did, since I switched to performance mode. I'll try playing with a few more things, but so far I'm stumped. Any other suggestions?

Also I was just playing with another file, which has a guitar track and 3 tracks for snare, bass drum and, cymbals respectively. The 1010 is in performance mode and only the guitar and cymbal track will play, I don't here the bass or snare even though they are on the same patch and channel...

jflagg, Interesting problems, dont really know
the answer, but here are some ideas:

The one thing about the JV1010 that drives me
nuts is the output levels. Some patches are
hardly audible when others are screaming loud.
I believe RevE and others have stated that
too, and the reviews at http://www.Harmony-central.com
all say the same thing, so its not your imagination.

I only use the JV1010 with instrument definitions
too, have never touched a knob. I have the
JV1010 master volume on max, and I simply
turn down the louder patches in Cakewalk. It
is frustrating, but the price was so great
that I just grin and bare it.



It is weird, but on occasion I have been in
Patch mode, and it actually worked just like
you claim, meaning I could here music on several
tracks in that mode, but the patches didnt
sound like their names, and then when I put
it in performance mode, different sounds came out,
like your band in the box problem, so I know
EXACTLY what you are talkin about.

I bet that you WERE in Patch mode, and for some
reason it worked, and then perhaps you bumped
a knob or something and went into performance
mode, which you should have been all along.


Try messing with it for a few days, making
sure you are always in performance mode,
and adjusting the crappy volumes accordingly.

Thanks for the tips Dave, it's funny but I think sometimes computers, and maybe sound modules just need a rest. You hit the cause of the problem right on the mark. It had been working for months. And, when the problem started I had been moving it around on the desk and did bump something, but I don't know what!! I read the reviews at Harmony-Central too, before I bought it, but like you the price was my biggest consideration. However, until now I had experienced no volume problems whatsoever and had been really happy with it. The main reason I believe I had it in patch mode, is we have a 1010 in our studio at school, and the prof. has always stated that it needed to be in patch mode,(as he said, "for some reason we can't figure out") in order to work. Also, I'd never really used it in GM mode until now, and my bass and snare seem really hollow, lots and lots and still more lots of reverb, is this the same on yours?

I never use the General Midi Mode either, I think
most of the sounds stink, plus it is a hassle
keeping things staight with the Performance,
Patch and general midi modes.

I generally use the JV1010 for drum sounds,
classic Roland Synth Sounds, some decent
keyboards, reasonable string pads.

For synths, right now I only have a JV1010
and an Alesis Nanosynth, which was $179.
I have a Midisport 2x2 Usb interface as well.
I am doing some very nice work with this
setup, which costs $650 for all three and
takes up less than a foot of my Desktop!!

I use Encore for Notation, Cakewalk Pro 9
for sequencing. I did my homework really
well when putting my rig together,
and I am really doing nice work within
a small budget.

When you consider the Price of the JV1010,
all the little quirks of this box seem
unimportant. Can you imagine time travelling
back to the early eighties with one? The
DX7 was $1,400 when it came out, and a new
car was $5,000 back then. I bought my
JV1010 for $395 new, then Spent $21,000
on my new Beetle! Good Luck, David
