Hey guys. well, I just decided to set up a studio in my basement. I love composing stuff, and what i've been doing up until this point is just recording it all on my clavinova. I'm getting kind of sick of the instrumentation. The trumpets sound like my grandmothers snoring.

I have an M-Audio MobilePre interface, a sterling st51 mic and i'm going to buy a MIDI controller soon. I've downloaded and played around with several recording softwares. I haven't seen anything I really like yet though.

I need to keep it under $300 for now, but what i'm really shooting for is somewhere closer to $150. However, if I am really impressed, I may be willing to fork out some extra cash.

What i'm hoping for from the software is something that will give me good virtual instrumentation and decent recording... power i guess. I'm going to use the software to mainly record guitar parts and compose music similar to film scores.

I really appreciate any help,
Zac Hirschi

Since Cubase is too expensive i would go with Reaper.
You could try some other mics and micing techniques. Also try to record in other room or just move in existing recording space.

I was looking at reaper and I couldn't find any virtual instruments. Is that just because i'm an idiot?

haha. :D
actually it's pretty easy:
1. right click on empty area next to timeline to open menu
2. choose "insert virtual instrument on new track"
3. choose your instrument

ok. well I haven't got my hands on a MIDI controller yet, so is there any way to use my keyboard or even drag and drop notes?

You could do worse than try Sampletank 2 or Miroslav Philharmonik by IK multimedia. The guitars in Sampletank didn't thrill me, but as I play a bit of git, I never went deep into tweaking it. The orchestral stuff is pretty good.
