i just picked up a handful of gear to get started recording on my laptop and i'd like some tips on ways to get as high quality a sound as i can recording simple vocal and acoustic guitar tracks. here's what i've got:

cakewalk's guitar tracks pro 3
m-audio's omnistudio usb
mxl 990
2 nady cm-88's

Yo' homeboy, ya' got to be a lil' more specific in your questioning.
 
Sounds like you (like most of us) are starting with just the bare essentials, I was at about the same place a couple of years ago. Prepare yourself for a lot of experimentation, some of it is fun and some of it is very frustrating, especially in the beginning. When you encounter specific problems post them and you will get faster and better responses. In general most of us have learned by trial and error so we can let you know some of the dos and don'ts and some of the real pros in here can even explain the whys. Any way, welcome aboard, and when you have questions, no matter how dumb you might think they are, don't hesitate to ask.
