At this point all I really want to do is record myself on several tracks - banjo, guitar, harmonica and overlay them. Software-wise I've got Audacity which looks like it will work just fine. I need to get a good mic, I'm leaning toward the Shure SM57. The Behringer UB502 looks like all I need for a mixer.
My biggest concern right now is cabling and adapters...
From what I've read it looks like I can plug an XLR cable into both the mic and the mixer - then I need to get from the mixer to my soundcard, a Soundmax something or other - Is the easiest way to do this with a cable from the tape out on the mixer to the line-in on the sound card? And that means RCA plugs on the mixer side and a mini stereo plug on the soundcard side, right? - or is there a better (sound quality wise) way to get from the mixer to the card?
And is there anything else I need between the mixer and the card - some sort of transformer???
thanks gang.

Sounds like you've got the right idea.

The tape outs of the mixer will be a line level signal and so will be fine going straight into the line in of your card.
