fellas,

it's been a while, but I finally got a chance to put up 2 additional demo mixes on my link.

We still have 6-7 more songs left to track before we actually start mixing for a final product in July.

One's a pretty straightfoward rock tune called, "My Perfect Romance". Then another one is a not so straight foward improvised tune called, "Preverbial Kings". Chaotic and not really going towards a specific structure or point. The lyrics for this song were actually improvised.

Check it out, let me know what you think. :) Let's politic for a little bit.

check it out

I apologize for not activating the download. Me and the band sat down as a whole and decided that it's best not to have premix stuff floating around until the thing is a done and closed case.

On a side note, definitly watch the volume on you computer speakers. The songs are pretty damn compressed, so I feel obligated to caution on that. Not something I'm proud of, but I lost that fight to the band. Nothing a serious mastering engineer can't do better when we get to that point. :)

My Perfect Romance.....

Oh well you do what you're paid to do at times....compression....YEAH!

Other than that the instruments, drums, vocals are all nicely mixed here.

The band rocks like H. E. double hockey sticks too... :D

Nice work Lee, nothing but good going on, sounds really good to me......

:) :) :) :)

Hey, I definitly wanna check out your tune in a minute, saw the post, just kina doing a million different things right about now.

Hi Lee, I listened to all four. I really liked "My Perfect Romance".

The "Preverbial Kings" kicked for the lyrics. For improvision, it is excellent. I really like it. The drums kicked in it!!

"Push Me" was cool too. You have a 70's aura around your tunes. This song has a nice build up with different flavours of sound to share.

Your "Ash Experiments". The vocal are excellent. I love the tone of the voice. This song is remineseince of Super Tramp style. One of the ingredients in the tune that catches me is the emotion of the song. Kudos!!

Lee, you said this is your band. What do you play?

As far as mixing goes, I have no imput really. :)

Thanks for the comments! it seems different comming from you, in a good way.

I personally play everything I can get my hands on. :D

But no no, this isn't my band. The guitarist and I grew up together and he found a bunch of people that just happen to play well together. I just happened to have a knack at recording and so I guess it was only time before we did a project together. Hopefully a few heads turn and it can get him where he wants to be.

However, I did have a huge hand in arranging alot of the parts. Not easy work! It's like the head hears one thing and it's hard translating to tape (this case harddrive)!

Tell me one thing, that sexy female voice on the recordings, beith that you?

I dig the tunes! (only caring about the actual music, not all that tech jibbity jibbity)

The first song, I cant think of what it reminds me of. Something that screams VH1 story tellers! And judging by the feel the music, I dun hear that be a big story! :D

But seriously, if people can just start naming off bands with that "chick with an iron fist" feel, I can probably nail it.

Aside from the fact that the band is talented and unique, the production is pretty rockin' too! I'm diggin it all! I definatley hear what you mean with your compression "problem" :D

Very awesome, very rocking. I like all the songs, and I think My Perfect Romance is really really awesome.

Just plain awesome....I can't say anymore than that!
(because it's so awesome) ;)

One interesting note,

we went through about 15 different versions of My Perfect Romance in one week. I'm always joking about it. "Come on guys, you're sweat'n me!" And these are just demo mixes!

We're technically not even supposed to care about mixing until july, but I guess it's just cool to get an idea.

But I think Tom (Mastering House) said it best,

"It's not a job, it's an affliction". :D

Hi Lee! Thanks for your kind words...yeah, that is I. Gee Lee, you really compliment me...thanks again and Kudos once more on your work here!!!

TRUE :)

Only had time to listen to "My Perfect Romance". Cool tune. To be critical, I thought the kick had too much tic in it and it seemed to be out of time at :46 up to 1:05 and at 1:39 again(an other spots), like it's behind the beat instead of with it. Is that intentional? Also the bongos don't seem to fit the song. Sorry for the negative comments but somebody has to do it :). Too much praise is not a good ding.

Oh no, that's why Im here!

Good call on that part. I think you referenced the post bridge part. Awesome observation. Orginally it wasn't intentional to be a little out of time, but that part was a mess when we rehearsed it. So there actually was alot of drum quantization in that part, using beat detective. No matter how much I would clap, dance in front of them, play loud things to keep them on time, they couldn't do it. (Keep that secret).

Normally they are good about it, but on this part, it wasn't happening.

Considering how it was before, thats the most accurate I could get it, without making it sound too digital.

Again, good observation, I like all sides of the spectrum :)

The kick, I think thats a byproduct of that excessive compression I was talking about. But yes, it was EQed a little on the brighter side, I'll have a listen to it a few times with that in mind and hopefully I can feel it out of place.

The bongos, yes! The way I originally had set up the song was with two versions: 1) A straightfoward rock tune without percussion 2) a rock tune with a tribal drum break down. I did that with the idea of hopefully expanding thier material for a good live show. (Like an incubus kind of thing)

However, the band sort of took that idea in thier own direction and thought it would be cool to have the bongo clip there. In all honesty, they left my idea half assed. But I guess that's the lick you take when you have to step away sometimes.

How do you feel the flow of the song?

I'm hearing the kick out of timing basically, not so much the other instruments and only in certain spots e.g. during the lyrics "Too nervous to be here To scared to start over again", the snare is driving right on beat but the kick is off post somehow. I'd like to hear it tightened up.
Anyhow, if I ignore the timing issue, I really like the way the song builds. Despite it's compression, it still has enough dynamics and emotion to keep it moving along.

what mics, drums, heads, sticks or anything else you can think of to get that drum sound. Its a nice sound and im in the proccess of changing up my drumsound right now anyways (o yeah it all sounds good not just the drums )

just listened to proverbial kings AWSOME! haha sorry i just listened to the first before my previous post

right on, man :)

I don't know what you do in your normal routine, but I think it involves music somehow, cause you bring up points that only certain type of people would go straight to.

And you're right, I sat down last night and I could hear that issue with the kick, and not just that, there's other things that could use a second thought. For example, a few of the bass lines clash in some parts, but lets see how it progresses.

Again, thanks for the comments. Any chance you could give a hint on what you do for a living? Cause I swear it feels like you work in music.

Well let's see if I remember this correctly (going from memory):

Remo Emperor batter heads for all top skins and Ambassadors for the resontant sides.

Mics:

SM57 on snare and both toms
MD421 underneath the snare

honestly, I was trying to look around for a mic to replace that SM57 on top of the snare. I'm not incredibly convinced about the 57 on the top snare for the stuff I have in mind. But, you work with what you get, right?

Beta 52 and a Beta 91 on the kick

and I believe a pair of CM95s for the overheads and CM90 on the hat.

The rest was tuning, but the preamps for this project are so borderline dissapointing, I didn't get the "soul" of the drums how I heard it in my head.

But like I say, "you can't win them all".

thanks, and do you have one of the metal clicks on the kick or is that all just beater slap (mainly thinking of the first song)

Hey Lee,

I listened to "My Perfect Romance"...........Great stuff!.....I love the guitar tone throughout and the drumming. The kick sounds a little clicky, maybe a boost in the 50-100Hz by a few db's.

Great tune!....I think you and your band are onto something very "Evanessancey" here!....That's a good thing!

Gorty :)
