is it any good or what ?

I suggest, to edit your topic right now, because in less than 20 secs, you'll have around 300 people talking s#it about that compressor. :D

cool as long as they give me some valid reasons and reccomendations im cool.....thats what im here for to learn

IMO, the 3630 is a piece of crap.... why, you ask?

1) Even in bypass mode, it colours the signal when it's in the signal chain.
2) It can't seem to handle +4dBu signals very well -- and gets real harsh-sounding when even mildly pushed at either gain structure (-10dBV or +4dBu.)
3) The noise gate often produces audible clicks when the gate engages/disengages.
4) The compressor section often produces strange artifacts - especially on low-frequency material.

IMO, for the same money, you can do an awful lot better than that unit!

Your mileage may vary...

My suggestion for the Presonus TubePRE is to use equal amounts of gain and tube drive to get the level you need. The tube drive is very clean. If you try to hit your level with mostly the gain you'll find it is a bit hissy. Using about a 50-50 mixture of gain and tube drive, the pre sounds the best in my opinion. Quiet and not bad for the price.

well as long as you have it try using it in RMS mode--not to much ratio or you will squash it to much

Also, the latest issue of TapeOp has a simple mod for the 3630 that supposedly makes it sound a lot better. The mod disables the gate, but many consider the gate kind of useless anyway.
