Just to let you all know that I have bought a secondhand mixer, Tascam M 312 from orginal owner for just 55 dollar. I have checked all the MIC input channels, the aux in/output and the master output. It was just amazing that all is in a great shape. No strange noise, smooth faders etc etc..

You can imagine that I'm in heaven right now !... The Tascam is the perfect match for the all digital studio which includes the Roland SI 24 board..

Greetz, Erik (Studio owner with complete new digital equipment and now the first vintage item in the Studio !)

An M312 for $55 ??

You mean they paid you $55 to haul it away???

They might as well have done that. $55 is like giving it away! ;)

You can put my name on the list of people who hate you

J/K :p

I'm just jealous, like Ghost.

Thanks all.. just discovered I have miscalculated :( . It is 75 euro, so that sould be about a 100 dollars... Still very cheap ! :)

Now looking for the 308B.. for the phantom channels and together with this mixer they just fit the console..

Erik :)

I will post some pictures soon..

I still hate you

But $45 less :p

Have fun with your new gizmo :)

Lucky Dog!

I have the very same mixer, wish it was the 320. Anyway, you will be (and already are, I bet...) quite pleased. The only thing I notice on my board is that the Headphone Jack can be quite finicky, you can/should ONLY put a Stereo headphone jack, or you can blow the circuit (manual states this also). If I wound up finding that board, I would've snatched it up, you can link two of those boards together via the 'Solo' and 'Ext Sens' jacks.

Very Lucky.

I just scored one these mixers recently as well. For 100 bucks at a local music store. Funny thing was I walked in there actually looking for one, you rarely ever see them now and BOOM there it was sitting on the counter all gritty and dusty as if someone had just dragged it in from their basement. I cleaned it up and none of the meter lights worked. It took me months to find replacements but now they're all lit up. Everything works great except recently the pan on the channel 2 tape return went on the right side. Is it possible for this to happen? Only on one side? For some reason the right side is weak. Any possible solutions?

Remember when dad would hit the "ol TV to make it work?

SteveMac,

Rap your knuckles on the open top area of the mixer to the left of the headphone select pushbuttons and in front of the meters, not on top of the meters. That should make the right side kick back in.

Cheers! :)

OOps It's not the 312 I got it's the M308. There IS a difference I guess.

Ghost I will try that. I like that easy fix. :D It's just the track 2 tape return pan/pot that is weak in the right(almost not there weak). The other seven are fine R & L. and the over all master is OK. Do you think it'll work for that one track?

...

Could be that the right wire on that particular Pan pot has come off,... or that the pot is really jammed up with dirt on the right side of it's travel.

You said it was very dirty from improper storage. Dirt's the cause of a lot of signal loss problems.

Could be ARP. That means I might have to take it apart and look. Not as easy as a couple good whacks :D but still a probable cause.

...

Try applying pot cleaner. Dirt's a menace to electronics,... like that.

Any recommendations of what type to use? Is there just that air in a can or is there something better?

Ah-ha

Thank you ghost. That did the trick. I just tapped it a few times beside the pot and it came back. It can still go out if I tap it but IT'S BACK!! So what does that indicate? A loose... "something or other"?

With TASCAM gear from that time period, I would say that indicates...

Character!!!

LOL!

:p

Yes. A rouge connection somewhere within but where that exactly is, is a mystery for sure that alludes professional technicians too because one of the two M312B that I own had the master faders changed by a reputable service center in my part of the world looking for this exact same problem that you described and couldn't find it. :o

One day in frustration, I hit my mixer in the spot I mentioned and it came back to complete normalcy! :D

They seem to stay fixed long enough to get through most sessions and that's good enough for me. ;)

Cheers! :)

An very old studio trick is to put a shoestring around the pot knob and give her a couple of dozen quick spins lock to lock. It will help to remove oxidation quickly. Works on all self cleaning pots.
