hello, guys:

This is a one of those songs that you normally hear in live only, but done at home. I am having some problem to get the guitar solo sitting right, and that's why I posted it online and am hoping for some suggestions. Thanks

It's called "Chill"

chill tune

I can't really offer mixing advice but I can say I'm enjoying the tune...
I didn't really care for some of the drum beats and the cross stick sound...but the rest of the drums sound good..
The guitar solo sounds too mono maybe.....panned center?...I don't know..I'm typing and listening........and diggin' this tune....I like the guitar sound and playing...maybe just not how it sits in the mix......which is the question you asked in the first place:D....I dont know....someone will help you I'm sure.......I just like the song..

It really is 'chill'

That was cool. I like the overall sound. A really good recording. There was one part in the guitar solo when you went low - it didn't seem to fit, like everything else got drowned out for a second or two. Please tell us how you recorded this. I'm pretty new to this home recording stuff so I can't give you any great technical advice, but what if you cut some of the lo-mid from the guitar? Would that help it fit in better? I'm just thinking that cuz when the solo went low for that brief moment, it was overpowering. I hope some of the pros check tjhis out, I'm learning from this one too - thanks and a great job.

Thank you guys for taking your time and listen.

I am very glad that you dig this tune. About the drum beats, I just used some samples and looped them cuz I can't really play/record drums in my apartment....About the guitar, yeah, it's mono, but I doubled it and panned them about 10% left and right. I guess I will have to try something different to get a better stereo image.

Thanks for your kind words. I agree with you that the first few seconds of the guitar solo went real quiet, which I think I over-compressed it, I will have to reset the ratio next time. About how I recorded this, it's quite simple since I have limited experience and gears. Basically: Strat->POD Pro (no reverb, just a slight delay+distortion)->RNC (compressor)->Audiophile soundcard->tracked/mixed in SonicFoundry Vegas with various plug-ins->Sound Forge for a slight overall compression.

I am not done tracking the whole song yet, in fact, i haven't finished writing this song. Just looking for some suggestion/opinions as I go alone. Thanks for all the inputs guys :)

hey nice song man! nice feel and mood...

how did you do the sax-like part in the beginning? or is it a real sax?

So far I think everything is sitting fine. Maybe look at your eq on the git solo for some roll off of the low end rumble. This could also be resolved in your pod chain I think. Basic stabs in the dark. The tracking sounds good on this end, untill you hear otherwise, I'd fiddle with the low end eq to get that grumble out of the git solo. Post the final project if you feel inclined. I'm curious to hear the whole thing.

grumble? I am not sure what you mean by that?
I boosted the treble, and rolled off some bass when I was trackin the solo track. I thought the guitar was too bright to my ears...
Nonetheless, I kinda like the lows towards the end of the solo, where I repeated the same notes several times...the F# note sounds cool when muted in this song in my taste. Is that where you found too bassy?

boy, now I am scared that this song isn't gonna get many more responses ha

What grabes people to listen on this forum? A finished song? Vocal? Pop-tune? Post by a nicknme that people know of? I began to realize that not many instrumental tunes are put up on this forum...

A1A2, I see the person who responds to this thread the most is you. Give it time. If its worthy they'll respond.
By the way when I go to download the song it says members only. Thats why I cant comment yet either. From my experience when there's the slightest hint of a hastle to download something, people will move on.
Just a thought.

Scott.
