I heard this is true but I want confirmation before I try this so I don't blow my amp up. I heard you can run a patch cable from a channel 1 input to a channel 2 input so you can use both channels at once. is this true??

yep. google it and I am sure you can find a picture somewhere. Its a very common practice.

What you are doing is taking a signal from the guitar before it has been amplified, I have a Fender Twin and do just that occasionally, other times I use it like a splitter box where I take the lead to another amp. Seems to work fine.
