Does anyone know how John Popper´s harmonica was recorded on the Blues Traveler albums? I see on concerts that he isnt using a harmonica mic but a regular dynamic (may be a SM58). Has he used this in the studio too?
I myself are currently using a stereo condenser and thats sounds good but are missing some warmth. But the stereoeffect is a good thing...

There's 2 main techniques that I've seen for micing harmonicas. (on stage, that is) One is with a harmonica mic, going to an amp (old tube-guitar amp). And the other is just an SM57, to amplify the sound of the harmonica without overdrive/coloration.

They both have their typical sound, advantages and disadvantages.

For recording this would be: either a harmonicamic, with amp, and micing the amp, or with any good mic that you think woud sound best...

Or record the output of the harmonica mic. I have no idea what it sound like without a guitaramp for coloration... actually...

This month's MIX magazine has a detailed article about recording Popper's harp... something like 6 tracks? I'd have to read iit again to quote it.

Kevin.

SM58 thru a Dual showman head using a little imp to get to the input of the amp. I dont know however what is in that huge tapeball at the output of the mic.

I use a 5 watt tubed crate and a sm58.

Thanks for the tip!

And Darrin, I dont know what a Dual Showman is but Ill find out...

It's a big ol guiatr amp. I think John's got a level controll for the mic in that ball of duct tape.
