Joe Meek

What do you think the man himself would make of the products that currently bear his name?

I'll be honest I don't really agree with making new products (as in new designs) with the name of a dead guy on them. He might have thought they sound like shit.

I read an article about him in an old SOS and it seems he was a real innovator, one of those people you get in any given field (of which there are only a handful) who steer the way for those that follow. And now his name is plastered on a load of budget, prosumer recording gear.

Don't get me wrong I have nothing against the products themselves and I'm not coming at this from a gear snob angle (I mainly use budget, prosumer gear myself), it just doesn't seem right to me.

Does anyone know any of the history about how he got to become a brand name?

Joemeek (all one word) is a brand name ... same as Disney, Fender and countless others. We already KNOW what Leo Fender thought of the direction of his company ... he went off to start G+L guitars, which spank Fenders all over the park at every price point except perhaps Fender Custom Shop. It wouldn't make much sense to tell Fender to pack it in though ... or scrap any new Mickey Mouse storylines ... :)

Those examples are totally different though mate.

In the cases of both Fender and Disney those guys started companies and chose to use their own names as a part of the 'brand'.

Joe Meek never owned or started a company making recording gear and as far as I can gather he never gave the nod for his name to be used as such (he died in 1967).

Hmmm I suppose that's partly right. But his name isn't really being used as a sales point, because most people haven't a clue who Joe Meek was now. Joemeek is just a byword for optical compressors and eccentric EQs.

I would say it's a less big deal than the posthumous name-tagging businesses spawned by associates of Jeff Buckley, Tupac and Elliott Smith ...

It's possible, of course, that I'm just not in the mood for a conspiracy theory this morning .... try me again later!!

Ha, no conspiracy theory. :D I'm sure it's all above board and that there aren't any reasons other than it being a bit of a selling point.

It's always bugged me a bit though, I don't really think it's on at all.

It's quiet here at work, can you tell. ;)

No nutters at Christmas?

I'm having a day off. Retail Christmas has killed me and I have university finals to do. If I never see another cheap Strat copy it will definitely be too soon.

I've been out of nursing for oooooooooh about 5 years now. ;) :p

I'm a buyer and at this time of year there aren't many people sellin' (well not the sort of things I buy anyway), so yeah it's quiet.

After today I'll probably be offline for a few days so have a great christmas and new year.

Cheers man, you too. When you get more bored, tell me what you buy (or don't buy at the moment). :)

I’m currently not buying large IT systems for Naval ships and all the stuff that goes with it (like engineering support, specialist consultancy for design work etc.). It’s pretty interesting I suppose, no sooner do you get a system designed and installed it needs a load of patches and new hardware to keep it up to date, and then once all that’s done it’s out of date again, you get the picture.

Very different from nursing!

Excellent. I guess war-based industries slow down for Christmas then? :D

They actually made a stage show (I think a musical) about joe's life.

It looked like utter shite!!!!

Didn't go see it though...
