Joe Meek 3Q

I picked up a threeQ while shopping for an ART, same price range and I had low expectations for the ART. I didn't think I'd get anything decent for this kinda $$. Boy was I suprised. I paid $239 CDN, I needed this unit for sketching vocal ideas and tightening up drum tracks before transferring to my Mac. I keep it nice and close (desktop) and it's ready to go whe I need it. For this use it's a fantasic unit. It's my impression that's the market it's aimed at. It's clear, the meeQ easily dials in and helps the vox sit nicely on the mix.

I could only see being upset about this purchase if you didn't know what you were buying. I wouldn't compare this to a $1000 rack, why would I?
If anyone is that upset with the quality of their threeQ, how much do you want for it? I could use one more.

Hey Bileshake,

Glad you like the new threeQ. We seem to be getting very good response from this new unit from quite a few people. We think the new units are much easier to control, and the mic amp, EQ and compressor are a big step up from the older ones.

If you just bought the threeQ, and if Dragon will allow this, there is a free mic promo, so see our web page so you can get yours. If you are in Canada, Power Music will handle the deal for you, just e-mail me for the details at alan@pmiaudio.com for your free JM27G mic....

Don't they have a Joe Meek corporate forum where they can hype products?

on one hand its spam, on the other hand people are getting some info they want (and some get a free mic)......

which hand i see it as depends on which side of the bed i wake up on......the side of the bed i woke up on today wants the EQ/JM27 deal.......

hey alan,

how does the twinq compare to the toft AFC?

cheers

Well, two different animals really. FET Compressor on the Toft...more like an 1176, and Photo-Optical on the Meek...more like the LA2A. I am not saying the Toft or Meek are just like its counterparts, but they use the same circuit and have those sonic characteristics..

The Meek has transformer inputs on the mic amp and more features, including digital outputs. The Toft is a real Trident 80B EQ, and the FET Compressor is way hip, as is ther Meek but a totally different sound. The only thing where they are similar is they are both dual channel mic amps....

I hope that answers your question....

kind of,

its not helping me with my decision though, i am going to run vocals and drum overheads (mc012) through the unit.

and another question,

i live in europe, why are those sp mics so damn expensive over here....i pay like 220 Euros for a b3 which would be like
290$...it retails for 170$ over in america, i don't get it

Well either unit would work well. Advantage to vocals go to the Meek because of the Transformer.

As for the prices, Distributors decide how much to charge the dealers. I think you will find that SP mics and all of our other products are better priced in the UK since we control the pricing there to match the USA. I do not know where you live in Europe, but remember, all distributors have to pay for the freight charges, Duty, and any VAT taxes or local taxes.... This adds to the cost of goods to get them there.

PMI products are amongst the very few that are priced similarly in Britain to America. Dunno about Europe though, you could order from someone like Digital Village or Turnkey in Britain and have them shipped?

My guess is you have the old units. Either the VC3, VC3Q, or MQ3. You could not possibly say that about the new Joemeek threeQ.

While all these model numbers are confusing here guys, the new products now shipping are worlds apart from the old units. The new one is not a colored pre, unless you add the compressor in. Here is one early opinion of the new unit

Hi all, Just wanted to share about my 3Q. I got 2 of them and had no recording projects going on so I was hurting for a opportunity to try them out. Well, my church had an outdoor gig and I, being the Worship Leader/head of the music dept and AV, got to run sound… don’t normally get to as I am usually playing. Well, I brought 1 of my 3Q’s along since I knew I wouldn’t have any outboard gear. Being that I am one of those that thinks that if the snare sucks, the whole thing sucks, I put it on the snare. It didn’t take long before I had more thwack than I could shake a stick at. The comp in that unit bites like a BIG dog. My drummer could just tap it and it was thunderous. It made me realize that now, for the first time, I could get a mix ready snare sound as I record it, not with my plugs later.

Anyhoo…. Schweet unit. I am hugely impressed!
Thanks Alan,
Robert

I think you all are talking about the old units....

This is pretty funny. The guy has an opinion. You offer your own opinion from your own sources, then tell the poor guy he is wrong and does not even know what he owns!

He,he. Great marketing. Too cool for school.

i think ,like Alan, he may have a different preamp than the ThreeQ......it is not colored at all........

It's amazing what marketing skills one can learn from the PMI Audio Group right here at hr.com isn't it. :(

I think the guy's either one of the best online marketers or one of the worst. I haven't decided yet.

I'll get back with ya on it, though. :D

The Three Stooges, Acorec, DJL, and Cheeserock.... Or is that the three Amigos

Why don't you find out what version he has before mouthing off. I bet I am right, or does that not count with you knuckleheads..... :p :)

Excellent. Any time knuckleheads is used followed by two smilies deserves positive rep points.

It's funny, I read this thread and wondered if it must have happened while DJL was on his 'time out', because it had gone one and a half pages without getting silly. Guess that hope is over now. Oh well.

Alan - we still on for Sounds Expo? It's in my diary now ...

Absolutely, as long as our booth gets there in time from the Frankfurt show. We have only three days from the end of Musikmesse to get the booth to London...

My hotel is booked. I am at the Wembley Park, so we are on. We should have a beer after the show, but we will be there in force... I look forward to seeing you there. It should be a good and well attended show....
:)

 What does that mean? Are you bringing bodyguards to duff me up if I put a conversational foot wrong?

"Yeah so, these mics, they're made in China right?"
"Justin, Brent, take him outside."

  :D :D

I was going to ask you the same question. The difference is that you launched a defense before you found out.

Haha, actually I will be there this year and I'm very much looking forward to some proper beer.
