On the album Goat by the JL, the snare sounds huge and great. Does anyone have any advice in reproducing that sound? It sounds like a huge wooden snare (hit extreamly hard) with a slight ambient delay (maybe from a room mic) and it sounds a little bit gated. anyone know the sound im talking about?

That's what it sounds like to me, gated room reverb.
The overall snare sound seems louder than the other drums as well. Even the cymbals.

It's a lot of things

Mac from Jesus Lizard is one of my faves (see the post about "worlds greatest drummer" and you'll find him on my list). The sound on Goat is a combination of a few factors: a STEEL 6.5x14 Ludwig Supraphonic snare, the dead center snare wallop of Mac McNeilly, and the pure, essene wizardry of Steve Albini. I've recorded with Albini on a number of occasions, and
I know for certain that he uses little, if anything, in the signal chain. So, gates? Probably not. Having gone into his control room to listen to pre-session scratch drum tracks I 'd just finished playing, I can attest to the fact that he gets those sounds by using the room to its fullest advantage – they're there on the tape BEFORE he starts mixing and adding outboard trickery. If you're talking about the song "Monkey Trick" on that LP – that might be an exception. That snare sounds effected, definitely. What it is, I don't know.

Thanks Mr monkey- im glad to get some advice from someone who has worked with Mr. Albini. I recently posted the same question on the electrical audio bulletin board. Any Idea what kind of Mics he may have used on the snare and/or room?

Yeah, Albini uses next to nothing except good mics, good pre's and great rooms. Having Mac playing is probably the most important aspect. I really have nothing too useful to say, I just dearly love the Jesus Lizard and Goat is by far my favorite record of theirs.

mics?

The only ones I'm sure of are the Coles ribbon mics. I'm less sure about what he used on the toms and snare - they were slim, silver...almost like an AKG OVERHEAD mic. My experience working with him came a bit before I started paying closer attention to things like that. Y'know...when I was JUST A DRUMMER! HA! :D And, well before he opened Electrical. These were his basement and CRC days (Chicago Recording Company, where Goat and many other fine Albini sessions went down).
