Does anyone here write, play or have any interest in Jazz? Dave Chambliss

this should be interesting :)

not my thing and I don't hear it discussed much but you never know...

I do.

I remember saying that to my wife, once. In the presence of witnesses !

Must be lonely here! What kind? Smooth, Fusion, Straight Ahead.... Do you have any music posted anywhere? Dave Chambliss

In a way, like the term 'rock', 'jazz' is something of a misnomer. Why for example, are many avant garde artists not regarded as jazz ? What is jazz ? Did Miles always play jazz ? Few people regard the Mahavishnu orchestra as a jazz band. But that's how they saw themselves.
Music with a large level of improvisation may or may not be jazz.
Anyway, the stuff I do is kind of varied and has jazzy elements at times but I'd never describe it as jazz. My "I do" was more in response to the third of the questions. I have a great interest in 'jazz'. Saw loads of jazzers or jazz influenced artists back in the day like Miles, Chick Corea, Roy Haynes, Alphonse Muzon, Wolfgang Dauner, Eberhardt Weber, Larry Coryell, Sam Rivers, Tito Puente, the Art ensemble of Chicago, Miroslav Vitous, Stanley Clarke, Trevor Watts, Louis Moholo, VSOP 2, Sun Ra, Arturo Sandoval, John McLaughlin's awful 1984 reincarnation of the Mahavishnu orchestra, The Ganelin trio, Amina Claudine Myers, Elvin Jones, Gil Scott Heron, Chico Freeman, Buddy Rich, Cecil McBee, Weather Report and loads of unknown British, European and American jazz folk of varying shades.
I went through a major jazz and jazz fusion kick in 1990 that has stuck with me to the present day. It really irritates me when critics parrot the "Miles Davies started jazz rock" mantra because factually, chronologically and historically, it's simply not true. The genre has a long, interesting and convoluted history. I could talk about it for ages but there's very little call for it here so it doesn't get much of a mention. Lt Bob is an improvisor and Rimshot plays sometimes in a jazzy vein. Alot of what gets talked about is more mainstream and popular rock. But then, it's influence on both music and history far outweighs that of jazz.

First time I've ever seen a left handed keyboard !
Are you Soundvoid ? I really liked the sound of "Shakti and Shiva" but it ends after 19 seconds !

Jazz is a bunch of ii-V-I progressions. ii chord, V chord, I chord, modulate, etc
Yep! Basic Jazz progression is heavily linked to basic classical progression in that it operates in fourths and fifths. I mean, you guys have heard of I - IV - vii - iii - vi - ii - V - I.

Jazz just messes with it a lot.

Fly Me To The Moon is the perfect example:

Am7 - Dm7 - G7 - CMaj7 (C7) - F7 - Bm7 - E7 - Am7

From the absolutely limited exposure I've had with jazz, it's classical rules heavily chromaticized, or at least operating outside of the Aeolian and Ionian modes that classical music is based around.

I really enjoy modern jazz – anything bebop and beyond.
