Hey Guyz:

Another lonely venture into the lost world of pop.

As usual, for better or worse, I played and sang everything again.

Sure wish I has some friends to jam with when I am recording.

I bought an Italia Rimini 12 string electric to go with my Italia Mondial Bass. It's alot of fun to play, and hard to put down.

Interesting guitar sound, reminds me a bit of a Rickenbacker sound. Yeah, it's got some jangle, some sparkle.

The vocal is mixed fairly well, out front and on top. The drums are mixed tastefully. Are those real drums ?

Their are some pitch issues in your vocal. As for the most part your lead vocal is in tune, these pitch issues on your harmony backups are just rehearsal and practice issues. Analyze what you are doing there, know what you are doing there. Sing the parts without monitoring the lead for practice purposes. You are going to need a big preparatory breath to push enough air over your vocal chords for those high notes.

Practice takng in a slow breath, starting in the belly and moving your chest slightly and gently up. Keep inhaling, even when you can't see to inhale anymore, keep the chest expanded ... no open your mouth wide and YAWN.

As another poster has recently said, start singing as you relase the yawn and start with a fairly high note, and then like a siren ... slowly glissando down and through that break point.

At 1:08, this vocal is much more pleasing, because your are singing closer to your home range I believe.

At 2:09, the backups and harmonies are a little better and I would mix the backup that is currently mixed stereo left, I would drop the volume a bit, hit a bit of delay, say 60miliseconds and move it closer to the lead, much closer to center.


At 2:27, this is the best vocally in the entire piece, that little section works very, very well.

At 3:41, again, you are in your 'good vocal range' and that vocal sounds real good.

At 3:55, ... that's a lot of strangs on that thang ain't it !!! sounds nice.

A very tasteful drum part, mixed well througout.

had to check this out once i read "12 string"......i need to own one of those some day.........

truthfully, i'm not crazy about the tone you got w/ the 12-stringer......not bad, but i think you could get more out of the instrument.........it sounds like a six string electric DI w/ a bunch of chorus and reverb...are you playing through an amp? try a cleaner tone so we can hear the ring a bit more......

This is a perfect bubble gum music tune except that 4 minutes and 18 seconds is too long!

Re-cut the track for 2:30 and you've got a masterpiece on your hands!

The overall fidelity of the mix takes me right back to 1968. How did you do that? There seems to be little to no bottom or top end to the mix and the vocals are distorted.

The playing of all the instruments were very well done. The vocals were fine too minus only one sour note I detected earlier on in the song.

Axe4Yahweh: I have a 1962 Slingerland Gene Krupa kit, as well as the Yamaha DTX Express. I used only the snare miked separately, and the rest is the DTX kit.
I still use N-Track, but this one was recorded & mixed on my Fostex DMT-8.

It's nice to have someone leave reference points in the song sometimes so I can really listen hard to what you are saying.
Thank you for that...As far as my vocals go, that's my biggest downfall to not having anyone who would like to take a shot at singing the stuff I write....I CANNOT sing.

Powderfinger: That guitar had such an accurate "jangle" to it when I tried it out and even now...Don't know what I did wrong to lose it in your ears. I had no effects on it, and miked my bass amp (unfortunatley) with a Sm-57, as my guitar amp is on loan to a buddy, and I wanted to try it without the POD I have.
Again, I wish I had a mentor around here to tutor me. :(

I suppose the recording was "lo-fi" throwback sounding by default...Read: My recording skills probably suck.

I would like to record some of my pop stuff again, with someone else singing it, though.

I can't believe you would be the loneliest guy here. No one to collab? Come on, man! Hell, I'd be more than happy to work with you on some stuff.. Although I track to ADAT, I use N-track as well. The only problem is I just have the soundcard that came with the pc. So pc recording isn't my normal route, but it's still usable.. So drop me a pm sometime. Got it?!

Anywho, I really dig your song. The guitars remind me of the Beatles circa Help. Slap some reverb on them and you have a very "Ticket to Ride" vibe. Nice job!

Songwriting is excellent.. great lyrics.. love the major to minor shifts.

I dig the vibe on the vocals. I am hearing two directions on the style: either a punkier style where you want to sing straight without vibrato (thinking Greenday here) or you want a more pop sound where you would actually want vibrato. Or both?

At :48, where you hold "alright".. I'm thinking that would be a great place to put vibrato.

Your vocals are almost there dude. I would drive around town, running this through my car stereo a bunch of times.. take deep breaths and push those higher notes out.. of course.. then people will wonder why you are singing instead of yelling at them to get off the road. But what's more important? Music or trying not to look like an ass?

good arrangement. The parts sound very good. A little pitch ticks in places but It rolls on past quickly. Id like to hear a little more snap in the snare for this. near the end of the tune I hear an edit point or something and drums gained bout a db1/2 or so. still played very well. The g and b string are a bit flat on that big rythym guitar. Good song to produce on out..
 
I can't have you feeling lonely, and you've already been beat on a little, so let me tell you what I like and then offer a couple suggestions on the 12 string.

First, I love electric 12 string! Always wanted one and may still get one. I like music that is driven by the instrument and good 4/4 time. The drums and bass were solid and played just like they should be for this kind of tune. Good melody going too. Its kind of a cross between Tom Petty and the Byrds (who he ripped to the hilt, to good effect in my book). One of my favorite 60's albums is the Byrds first record with Mr. Tambourine Man, by the way. It still sounds awesome to me.

Anyway, this 12 string is a prime candidate for a guitar modeler. You actually want a direct sound to bring out the jangle. I read an article on how they got the sound of McGuinns Rickenbacker. They boosted the treble all the way on the board and ran it through two piggybacked compressors to keep it ringing! You could come close with a modeler with a clean preset, jack the treble and use a Dyna-Comp or other compressor going in. I just picked up an MXR Super Comp, and its the best guitar compressor I've ever had--under $70 over at Motor City Guitar.

Maybe you'd like to do some real drums on something for me sometime? Can't have you lonely!

I find it hard to beleive that you have trouble collaborating after experiencing your performances at the Jamfest...
To make the sound more modern, perhaps a slight increas in tempo would be appropriate....

I thought the vox was not out front enough actually...
on a Pop tune it should be the highlight of the tune....way out front...ya know?
More harmony vox would be cool too...but I think you are already straining your range on the vox...
The drums need to come up in the mix too man....
I can't hear the kick...snare is weak too...

I like the song. Really nice, suits my style. I liked the guitars. Nice and jangly. Kind of Tom Petty-ish (that's the only part of Petty I like BTW).

You have some pitch issues throughout. That high harmony seems to be stretching your range. If it were me, I'd rehearse that part for a few days and come back and try to get a good take. The lead vox have some pitchiness too.

I like your voice. Very distinctive. Gotta get some good takes though.

Oooo I like that little guitar run at 3:54. Nice touch.

Listening on small headphones, but I think it could use a little more low end and a little more punch in the bass.

The overall level to the thing is a bit low. A limiter over the full mix would help with that.

Most definitely keep working on this one. You idiot.

that guitar sound is REM circa Murmur/ Reconing...vocals are kind of dead milkmen ish...very different...cool.

mixwise, i wanna hear the vocal come up a bit and maybe be a little fuller (maybe double it ?)......

i wanna hear the bass line better, and the kick while im at it........

id also like an acoustic tucked right under that electric filling it out a bit.......

good tunage dude......

A fine bit of popistry,V.I.!I love the garagie sound.I do think that the vocal on the chorus is shaky.Might be a little out of range.I dunno.
