Nice tune, nice performance. Pity about the recording. Sounds a lot like the whole band was recorded with the same room mic, except maybe for the bass, which is a bit too prominent. You might want to get a new guitar, too.

Point taken, never thought of it that way, rate is a bad choice of words. as to the recording, the music parts were done in one shot as scratch tracks, the plan was to track everything and replace them. the client wanted to keep them. so we did and tracked the vocals. they were looking for an old school raw sound so it is what it is. Thanks for the comments.

If I were you I'd suggest re-recording the instruments over the scratch track and do another mix. Show him what it can sound like with some good separation of the instruments in a mix. This is a little cloudy. Unless you can tidy it up some more. I'd say it's always best to do both ways then you can pick the best of them or blend the two.

That is what I want to do, trying to get them back in. doing it all in one shot there is bleed over on everything. I wasn't really worried about it at the time because we were going to track everything. being a noob at this it was a good learning experience for what not to do. Thanks!

what system did you record this with? what recording gear was used?
it sounds like a clean recording, so I assume not a bar room.
but the volume is not enough and the recording sounds like its balanced well...but needs something done somewhere? gain staging?

Coolcat, thanks for the questions. It was recorded on a DP-32, MXL-990, and MXL-V63 on the vocals, guitar and bass direct via a DI box. Shure Beta 52 on the kick (which was a wooden box) SM-57 on the snare, and OH on the kit. I have attached a photo of the kit as I cannot explain it Thanks

It might just be my old ears, but the vocals, although well performed and sharp and bright, are unintelligible. I mean, I can't understand about half the lyrics. A bit better enunciation from the vocal performance might bring this a bit closer to what it sounds like it could be. When you hear the same song over and over and know what the lyrics are (like when you practice it enough to get this good) sometimes you can lose a little clarity. I fight this in my own songs a lot. I always ask my wife to write down the lyrics she hears when I'm done to be sure I haven't gravel-mouthed some of the words out of existence.

Thanks! good point! as someone who sings only in the shower I do not think of things like this.

I thought the performances were a little loose. Some tempo slopiness in spots.

Words at the end of phrases drop off and can't be heard.

The bass is really flabby.

The vocals cover the acoustic guitar in a lot of places.

The drums sound very roomy and the snare is lacking in any power.

Thanks for the comments, the drums were a challenge, you will notice the odd setup from the previous photo I posted plus he played with brushes. The bass player was very green at playing so I think she was nervous about the whole recording thing. Although I failed to pull off what I wanted, it did present some unique challenges and I did learn a few things. Thanks for the post!
