J-Station or Behringer Vamp2???

Do they suck? Are they OK?

I need an amp modeler for my electric violin. I am kinda broke, and these 2 are about $140-150. The Pod is $250.

1. Should I hold out and spend the extra cash for the Pod?
2. Will The Jstation or Vamp2 work? Which sounds better?

I feel like a newbie asking this stuff, hold me:(
 
I like the J-station, but I suck. For me the POD was not worth the xtra $100.
 
I put the J-Station head to head with the Pod for a few hours when they were the same price and chose the J-Station, so now its a no-brainer......

why do you want a modeler? Do you really want the variety of sounding like you're plugged into a Marshall, or a Mesa Boogie or a Fender?... or do you want more a realistic room sound and/or effects in general?
 
I was surprised by the V-amp...

a buddy of mine's band just recorded some songs at one of the local studios and they used just a V-amp for the project, no amps....mostly due to budget (i.e. time) constraints.

I was there during the tracking and was VERY skepticle about not micing amps.

It sounds really good. I was very pleasently surprised.

....but feature wise the J-station has bass cabinets and SPDif outs.

And why not have a variety of textures at the touch of a dial???
Cant really hurt. Its just more options.

I agree. However, even though David is inquiring about amp modelers, I was just wondering if that was really his goal. I'd think the modeling of an amp would be less significant than other effects/textures.

I tend to think the modelers try to emulate the way the different amps react, as to when they are overdriven, rather than imposing a unique tone unable to be achieved with EQ alone. Although I am not a fiddler, I would not plug my elec vln into an amp. I would probably have it run thru a PA or a portable full range rig like a keyboard amp and be more interested in harmonizers, choruses, etc.

But then, one of my good friends loved to run his trombone thru a fuzzface, so.....
 
I'm really surprised some people like the V-Amp II. I usually like Behringer gear, but the V-Amp II was totally unusable to me. I tried the presets and I tried to alter them to my taste, but it didn't work for me. Might be okay for hi-gain fuzz, but prefer vintage clean and crunch stuff.
 
Go with the J-Station!

Sounds awesome, SPDIF out, computer editing of patches and it's really affordable at $150.

I got mine for $125 at GC a while back by talking the sales guy down. I flat out told him I wasn't gonna buy it for $150. He tried to call my bluff but I held firm and got a deal.

I prefer the V-AMP2 but they are both great. I've had mine for over a year now and still love the thing. I can get any sound I want out of it.
