My point exactly Brucey, but Doc you do believe and me... :(

The guy asked 'what's the minimum for a HOME STUDIO?'
He didn't ask 'what does it take to get good mixes/recordings?'
or 'what does a good engineer need the most besides NS-10's?" ;)

1. Something that records. Computer, DAW, or tape. Real men use a Grammaphone with wax cylinders.

2. A microphone-Duh. Also a mic stand, mic clip, and some cables would be nice

3. A mic preamplifier, either as a separate unit, or built into the recording device or a mixer

4. Something to record

5. A set of headphones, so you can listen to what you recorded.

That's pretty much the minimum. Did I mention that the recorder must be a 500 gig custom platform, the mic must be a Neumann U47, the preamp must be a Neve-Avalon custom hybrid console, the source must be a Grammy winning superstar, and the headphones have to be very large to fit the superstar's inflated head?-Richie

Absolute needs are simple:

-instrument (voice, others)
-microphone
-something to record said microphone
-speakers/headphones

I spent a lot of time working with just the above (and cheap, cheap versions of each).

And, since I like to answer questions with questions, I'll send you to this link to think about it

I get really good results ( and I know no one is going to believe this ) with 1 gig PC, Soundblaster Live with Livedrive, and a Behringer UB1832 Pro mixer, an SM57, and a Oktava MK-300 That is pretty much the "heart" of my little modest home studio.

...However, I also have a Boogie Stack, a Marsahall JCM800 Stack,
a rack (or 2) full of mid to top end gear, a Roland V-session with the TD-10, tdw-expanded brain, several guitars and bases, and keys. I'm not bragging here, (Maybe a little..hehe) I'm just saying you can go as basic as a 4 track and a couple mics, or to an extreme. What it really boils down to is good material to record, and a source to record it to. Except for the computer and mixer, the rest I have gathered over years of being in bands and such. So keep in mind, if you are going to have a $200 mixer, don't buy a $1500 mic, and SGT. PEPPER was recorded on two 4 tracks synced to togeather. Also, do some homework on an item before you buy anything.

Only other thing I could add...
....spend some time on sites like this one.

Ya all left off the number one ingredient....

A home.........

And if ya gotcha ya one of those and a wife and kids then ya need a room to yourself. If I had oulets in the attic I might move up there.
