What do you consider a "absulte got to have" for evey home studio,

Please name everything that you consider is a nessesity for a home studio.

A recording device. Even so simple as a little mic plugged into a tape player that records. There's a studio!

In these days I would consider a computer with some recording software a necessity. It really isn't, but I believe it to be the most efficient (physically and economically) recording equipment.

1) Something/someone to record.

2) Something to record it/them with.

This will generally mean some sort of microphone, mic cable, preamp with phantom power if necessary (or mixer), and finally, some sort of recording and mixing apparatus.

Three things:

A Sound-to-voltage transducer (e.g. microphone, guitar pick-up)

A recording medium (be it tape, harddisk or other)

A voltage-to-sound transducer (e.g. loudspeakers, headphones)

Those are your ABSOLUTE minima.

Then come musicality, instruments (be it electric or acoustic), recording skills, the room and finally gear!

I consider this as one of my most abstract, yet completely on-the-money posts! ;)

Microphone: a dynamic (SM57) and condensor (LD or SD)

Cable (mics, speakers, misc)

a recorder (DAW, HDR or tape) - either with outboard FX or plug-ins

a speaker system (bookshelf or monitors)

I you want a more precise answer, you'll have to ask a more precise question: your needs, your goals, your budget, your taste,...

Hope this helps

Good ears, and an ear for what constitutes good sound....

There are many people who have no clue about the characteristic of sound quality.

Bruce, I can sit here at home with my great set of ears, and a superb knowlegde of good sound, but without 2 transducers and a recording medium, I ain't got no studio. I'm just a guy with good ears then, eh? ;)

But on the other hand, if you have 2 transducers and a recording medium, but no ear for sound then you're no better off! ;)

The question wasn't, "What is the absolute minimum for a *good* recording studio?" It was, "What is the absolute minimum for a home studio?" Period.

Doc,

You don't consider having good ears a prerequisite - even for a home studio?

I'd like to ad the following:

1) Patchbay with nothing hooked up to it (because you gave up).

2) Pair of Behringer ECM8000 reference mics.

3) Jar with change (saving up for the day you can afford something expensive, like an RNC compressor).

How come I missed these ?:

* Alesis 3630 for smoothing out your tracks

* an EEK-YOU to match your speakers to your room

* cheap dimmers and preferably every piece of electric gear on one circuit. Power conditioners are for wussies that live near a radio mast

* gear bought based on peoples reviews and opinions, but never personnally auditioned

* a control room facing the positive pole of the earth, for good vibes

You gotta have a Behringer Mixer for a home studio. Hell, I got one........

I would up that a bit, and say that you need a multi-track, actually. That means you also need a mixer. Put it together, and you have a 4-track porta. Done!

That is the only essential stuff you need. Then you want to ass a compressor, reverb, and a condenser+better preamp, in that order.

THEN it gets tricky. ;)

What about standalone DAWs?!?

They only have to be able to hear what they just laid down. A pair of good ears only is important in a good studio.
