I've narrowed it down to 4...

Looking for a set of monitors for my home studio. I've read all the posts, reviews, and searched the net.

Here's what I'm down to:
Yorkville YSM1i $230
Tannoy Reveals $320
Event 20/20 $300
M-Audio BX8 $300 (one of those "i know somebody" deals)

I'm looking for what will give me the best mix translated to other systems. Good imaging. I've read that there is a lack of bass with some of the above. I'm not sure if this will be an issue with the style of music.
I record alot of rock/punk and occasionally trans/techno.
I'm set up in an attic with carpet and slanted walls/ceiling, so I don't have a good room.

So, here it is, what do you all think?
What do you like, hate, comparisons, anything will help.

Thanks, Jay.....

Looks like you're referring to the passive models of these speakers.

It's hard to say for sure not having heard either of the passives, but given that the YSMs would IMO surpass all of those in an active comparison, I'd still place a bet that the passive version would do equally well in relativity.

The Tannoy Reveals have a severe lack of bass, while the others are fine in that aspect. They do greatly make up for that with the remainder of their well defined bandwidth which is why I'd still probably put them in second place. All this considering the performance of the 20/20s and BX8s, and between the two it's hard to choose.

Just a tip: you might amend your question by asking folks who has actually used any of these monitors for mixing--and then their opinions. I've found that many of us recommend either what we now own or what we've heard others recommend. Nothing subsitutes for actual experience, and your own experience listening to these monitors will surpass anything we can tell you.
Still, recommendations can help if taken with salt and backed up with someone's personal experience.

Personally, I've only worked with the BX8s and like them, especially because they allow fine EQ tuning for acoustically strange rooms, like mine and (it seems) like yours. Since I can't change my room--money and my wife prevent it--then I need to subtly shape my sound into something that translates well to my other systems, and the M-Audios do a fine job of this for the money. I know nothing, personally, about the others, having only seen them in stores and read about them.

Good luck,

J.

I have to go do some listening.

It seems there isn't a preferred monitor out of the 4 I listed. I guess alot of it comes down to the sound you/I like, and finding a monitor to give that. There is no universal solution.

I can make a mix on computer or bookshelf speakers that sounds awesome to me, but play it on something else, and it sounds terrible. I don't want to pick the wrong monitor and have the same thing happen.

I'm worried that when I go to listen at the stores, I won't know what I'm listening for. Plus, every monitor will sound different in different rooms.

If anyone has any experience mixing with any of these, I would like to hear how they worked out for you. How did your mixes translate to other systems. Thanks all for the feedback so far.
