I'd like to hear some thoughts on the songs and especially the production. Not the best recordings, but I already have an idea of what's wrong. I'd like to see if your critiques are similar to my own.
"Here Comes Soft Rain" Is a pretty jammin heavt tune, with a suprise twist at the end!

"I'll Set you free" is a mellow song using a classical guitar.

Tell me what you like, what you don't like, critical ears encouraged!
thanks

more ass-sucking hip gangster wannabees.

listened to "Here Comes Soft Rain"

- vocals too far away - bring them up!
- I listened to it just with the phones(maybe I'm wrong) but the bass seems to be muddy
- the drums need to be remixed -- toms are louder than the snare and the ride/crash section is way too loud imo

overall a good song - liked it!

cheers

I've had "I'll set you free" on my playlist for a while from when you posted it way back. I like that one and have listened to it many times. You have a good Marty Balin-ish vocal style going there.

"Here Comes Soft Rain" sounds like one of those where you can tell the sounds in the room are better than what's captured in the mix. I feel like I've heard this one too. Did you post it before? Anyway, the recording sounds a little boxy. Maybe overcompressed? It seems to lack dynamics. Vocals could come up too. It is a cool song with cool playing, just the mix could be more lively.

'here comes soft rain' - good song.. fprod south said 'sounds like one of those where you can tell the sounds in the room are better than what's captured in the mix.' I totally agree with that.. This recording sounds like two mics hanging from the ceiling to me.. good song though.. lots of timing mistakes on the drums..

Some very good insight, thanks for the comments.

-As for the drums, I am using a Zoom RT-123 drum machine, so I just have to live the lack of balance.

-I think Here Comes Soft Rain sounds a bit boxy as well. I only added compression to the bass and vocals, but the whole mix sounds squashed, it seems most of my recordings come out like this. First of all, my Mackie mixer has had the infamous ribbon cable problem (it's in the shop right now). Could this have contributed? Also, I may have done the level setting wrong and introduced some extra noise. Other than that I don't know what I'm doing to make the mix seem compressed? I record the tracks pretty hot, but I thought you were supposed to? BTW, it's the first time posting this song.

My next big question...do you think these mixes would benefit from mastering. I was going to have them mastered but I don't want to send them a poor mix. I won't be able to remix or retrack for quite some time because my recorder will be used on another project for the next several months. Besides, I 've been working on thse songs to long, I'm sick of them now, hehe.

Thanks again for the advice!
