I have just been knocked over by the sound of an SM81, but I heard it on a Taylor grand auditorium rather than something simular to my rocket launcher 41.

I know I have asked about which mic will bring out my true tone, but I am older and wiser now and have to re-ask.

I believe those neumann 84s where popular last time I asked, but my buget went to a preamp instead.

I don't know if I can even afford a pair of 81s right now, but I will wait to get something better. I just need mics in that price range to go look at or check around and find stuff recorded with them.

Anyone?

On a budget, Studio Projects C-4's are pretty damn good.-Richie

Audio Technica 4041. A pair can be found for less than the sm81s.

Believe it or not, I actually think the Oktava MC012's (if you find a couple of good ones) sound better than either the 4041's or the SM81's.

But KM84's or Josephson C42's are another story!

Okay hold up a minute........

Whats the difference between Km184, and Km84

Is there even a Km84?

The KM84 is a discontinued model, and highly regarded.-Ricie

Audio Technica Pro 37s run for $140 each and they are awesome! Just a thought!

I recently had some recordings done with a KM84 - through a Spirit mixer, and I'd have to say I consider the results to be rather average, however I blame the lack of decent pre and the lack of care in positioning the damn thing, rather than the mic itself.

But it has changed my mind about buying a sooper expensive CD microphone - at least at this stage - average pre notwithstanding, I still didn't like the overall tone of it.

I've always why SM81's never get any mention or respect around here. Is it the price issue alone?

The Shure SM81 is a good mic and my favorite hi-hat mic... it's the price issue.
