It may be tough to get a really full sound out of a shallow snare. Another mic placed farther away might work.

Do you have a Noise Gate?

Roll off some of the mids around 500-1K
Set the noise gate to cut off the snare.
Then send it through a small to medium sized room reverb.

The problem is that a Piccolo snare isn't really designed for a "powerful" sound.

I would suggest a 5" Ludwig Acrolite Snare.
It's a basic 8 lug snare with a cast Aluminum shell.
It's really a cheap drum, you can get them for $50 used if you look around.
For some reason (the cast shell) the things record really well.

Kenny Aronoff (John Cougar, Smashing Pumpkins) swears by the thing....he says it's his favorite recording snare.

It just has a great "crack" to it when you hit it.

On the Piccolo, you may want to try a thick batter head, like a Coated Pinstripe, or even a clear (aka "glass") Evans Oilhead.

make sure you mic the botton of the snare. this is where a lot of the sound is and it should really add some character to the snare.

lol, quite a coinsidence...im doing a band tomorrow and we are using a piccolo snare too!

i think im going to use a 57 on top and an akg C414 on bottom to 'open up' the sound a little.

it's worked well before.

i've tryed that.

i've tryed that once or twice but all i get is a paper hit sound.

thanks any way longwave!

with a 414 on bottom??

ive got a wicked sound with it.
are you recording in a good room?

where are you mixing it.

have you reversed the phase of the bottom mic??

you should get a pretty good sound with that mic config.
