Issues with ATR tape?

Thanks guys for the last few posts. I needed a good laugh and I got it. I'll except your challenge!! I guess I might be overreacting a Tadd, but after 2 reels with different batch numbers I tend to think it was the tape manufacture. I was even asked to send RMG picks of my transport system for a deck that just came out of service with flying colors. I even sent picks of the q tips after 500 feet or so of use. Also, I can hear a huge difference in highs between the RMG and ATR. As I said in a previous post I have a strange noise when I convert analog to digital. That's why I haven't posted any of my recordings. PM me if your serious.

OK, I have to be stingy here and renege on the splicing block, 'cause those things are really expensive! BUT, I'm still serious about my challenge. PM me your mailing address and we'll work out the details.

I want to settle this! :D

EMTEC 468 on Teac X1000

Hi,
I hope no one minds me jumping in. I have a number of reels of EMTEC 468; can anyone help me with the best bias setting to use: LH-1, LH-2 or EE? I don't want to rebias the deck because I have several reels of Maxell and TDK from the 80's that I still use.

My guess (and it is nothing more than that) would be to use the highest bias setting, whichever one that is of the three you listed. The X1000R is a consumer deck (though a hearty one) and 468 is a "professional" mastering tape that, IIRC requires more bias (though marginally) than 456 even though it is also a +6 tape like 456.

Thanks Sweetbeats. EE is the highest seting. As far as I can gather from the service manual, the bias frequency is 100kHz and LH-II is 3dB over-bias and EE is 4dB over-bias. I therefore assume that the EE setting is still a bit under biased.

Yes, use the EE. It may still be a bit under but let your ears be the judge.
