Iso Booth Construction For Dummies? Pandamonk HOLLER!

Hey, im lookin to build a small isolation booth, and would love if somebody could do a brief little "Iso Booth Building For DUMMIES" type thread, or even respond in here. I've read a shit load of threads on this site and the john sayers website.. and ive picked up some knowledge..

but it would be cool to know the ideal dimensions for a small iso booth, enough room for 1 person and a mic.. i read that certain dimensions make for bad acoustics, or echo or something..
i plan on having the booth in the corner of the room, but dont plan on using the existing walls, i want it to be a seperate unit.. i figured that by using the same materials, instead of incorporating the existing walls, it would make for better acoustics? or am i trippin there...
the room has a cement floor, but hardwood on top, which makes for a wack echo, one of the main reasons for building the booth (as well as im livin with the folks still)
i have about 10 feet from the floor to the ceiling.. and i was thinking of making the walls about 4 ft wide... but im horrible with construction so HELP ME OUT!!
i would also like to know, just like the ideal soundproofing techniques..
ideal carpeting..
floating floors or not? rock wool or cement?
metal doors or wood doors?
a list of materials would be nice... gypsum board? timber frame? insolation (what kind?)...

im sure i will have more questions.. but any help is GREATLY appreciated

Hey. Ok, so do you need isolation within the room, or just from your parents? What is the wall like separating you from your parents?

What you want is as much mass as possible in a MAM(mass-air-mass) structure(the existing wall can act was one of the mass, if you don't need much isolation within the room). The inner mass should be decoupled from the outer, meaning no flanking path for noise. This means building a floating floor(mdf/plyboard on rubber sheeting), and building the walls on top of that, not touching anything else.

Square, and especially cube, rooms are not ideal for room acoustics, so stay away from this if possible, although for ease of building and budget for materials 4'x4'x8' is probably best.

If you need isolation within the room, then you will need to build a two leaf structure. This can be done by placing the booth(that i will suggest) in the corner, and building another leaf round it(see picture below).

If you don't need isolation within the room, only from the rest of the house/neighbours, then check out my suggestion/step-by-step building guide over at the portable vocal booth thread. This should give you all the info you need to know about building a booth. :D

lol saw that comin.. and yeah i can obviously search for hours and come up with my own list of materials that i think im gonna need based on the information found, but i figured since this was a forum where people are helping other people.. it wouldnt be a big deal for me, to try and save some time by asking a direct question? still have a problem with that?


and pandamonk.. thanx alot, i noticed that your a helpful guy around here thats why i put your name in the title.. and excuse my ignorance on the matter at points.. i just like to have my own questions answered as opposed to gathering information from questions that others ask, but might not necessarily relate to what im going after.. if that makes any sense at all.. regardless thanx alot

i did read that portable vocal booth post before i made this thread, and i did pick up alot from it.. i know now that the two leaf structure will be best.. i want isolation within the room, the hardwood floors drive me nuts with the echo.. we got the mic in the corner and egg cartons all around lol, but i wanna get serious about this, money doesnt really matter..
if this makes sense...
i want isolation within the room.. cause i hate the echo from the hardwood floor.. but i also want there to be as little sound escaping from the booth as possible, so its not annoying my folks upstairs and the people walking by outside..

its going to be a seperate structure and the walls that it will be upagainst face outside, to the porch basically..


is there any way somebody can drop a list of like..
the idea wood... glass for windows... insulation... chaulking?
im sure there must be specialized acoustic products for all of the above.. anybody know the best..?

Hardwood flooring is great in studios. Keep it and add absorption(rigid fiberglass panels, do a search) to your walls/ceiling.

Egg crate does almost nothing, and anything it does is only at the highest frequencies.

I think, if you don't need isolation within the room, that a 1 leaf structure should be fine, with the second leaf achieved from the existing walls. To dampen the reflections, you need acoustic treatment(absorption), which is a totally different ball-game to isolation. In my booth suggestion, the absorption is done by the 4" rigid fiberglass.

Again, do a little search in this forum, and you will find answers to your questions. For isolation you need mass, and airtight seals. Mass can be achieved with drywall, MDF, plyboard etc. Seals with caulk, silicone, rubber door seals, etc. For acoustics, absorption and diffusion. Absorption, in the context of a recording studio, can be achieved through the use of proper acoustics foam and rigid fiberglass. Diffusion, with correctly designed and manufactured diffusors, like this.

That's a great booth, but firstly, i doubt you need the staggered stud wall, if the isolation is only for people outside/the rest of the house, and there is an existing wall. 1 leaf should do. And secondly, his absorption is way too thin, which means, there will definitely be bass problems in that booth, especially since it is so small, you're basically in all the corners.
 
My wife works in a doctors office, and they have one of those booths where they test your hearing, which is exactly like a professional vocal booth. I'm trying to jew him out of it, since he doesn't use it. But I can't find a price on a vocal booth anywhere online, so I have no guideline as to how much to offer him for it.
