welllllll

a guy told me he started selling all his 57's after he used this HEIL mic,

check out:

http://www.heilsound.com/proline/default.htm

no, i'm not trying to sell this stuff, but i find it a bit weird,
i don't see me sell all my black beauties

so did anyone ever try a HEIL mic?

they seem to be warmer and 'better' than the 57's

its like,,,i'd like to push that guy in the stumach, but don't wanna do it before some other people gave their comments

anyone?anything?

the shure sm57 is like sex... there are some things worse than sex and some things better than sex... but there's nothing exactly like it.

What the Heil?

Everytime I read P.A.R. Joe Walsh tries to sell me one.

Who knows...buy one and let us know!

you might have to be the trail blazer on this one

after seeing the price....and the design.....i think it might be more retro looking than anything. if they are warmer then thats fine...but i cant see me doing rock music or rapping out of those mics....i see elvis pressley using one and dan rather and tom brokaw in their 20's using the other.

I'm sure it's not "better", just different sounding.

There are plenty of top AE's who have gotten/are getting world class results on various applications using the SM57.

I believe it if you're only running a '57 into Mackie XDR mixer pre's though.
It becomes a whole different animal through a Great River or some such. :)

IIRC Ty Ford did a review of some Heil's on his website.
You may want to find it via a google-type search.

I've got some old Heil gear in the basement. PA stuff (a two channel 10 band graphic EQ and a stereo crossover). It was solid stuff in its day. I didn't know he was making mics now and he's a local boy. Go figure. I'd love to hear one.

We've had the Heil for about 14 months now and it works very well on guitar cabs, usually beating out the SM-57.

Wasnt there a review of Heil mics in Tape Op about half a year ago? Maybe Im just delirious

revieuw in tape op?

might be very possible,

the dude that tries to make me WARM for this mic does read tape op,
(hehe, i subscribed for it, he reads them first and then sends them over to europe for me :))

so i guess he read a revieuw, tested a mic and bought 4 others

he's recording drums with it, and did some vocal tests,

mhhh,,,maybe they sound great if he uses them, he's a very nice engineer,
them mics might sound rotten when i'm using them, who knows !è

i'm not buying one of them, i'm broke, and i'd rather get me a sennheiser md-youknowwhichone ;)

money sucks, doesn't it

Here's the TapeOp review.

PR 20 Review in TAPE OP (A newsletter for recording studio enthusiasts) Heil Sound PR-20 Microphone

Open letter to Jon Brion:

At last year's TapeOpCon in Portland, OR, when asked what piece of gear you hate the most, you responded by saying that you hate the Shure SM57. Why do we have to always use them?, you asked, making a plea to try something but I like my SM57s, dammit!

Then my friend Elisabeth Papapetrou (RIP) suggested I try the new mics that Bob Heil was making in Illinois. If you didn't know, Mr. Heil is a live-sound pioneer who's toured with The Who and The Dead and has been credited with many of the major innovations in live-sound production. Mr. Heil was downright pissed off that he couldn't buy a good mic assembled right here in the USA without spending upwards of a grand. His goal in building his proprietary capsule was to create a dynamic mic with frequency and transient response approaching that of a condenser, with the SPL-handling of a dynamic.

Heil hasn't really marketed his mic to the Pro Audio community, but his mic has a strong foothold in Broadcast, where it's getting rave reviews next to SM57's, SM58's, SM7's, EV PL20's and even AKG C 414's. We get a lot of mics to review for Tape Op, and I usually leave them in my studio for other engineers to try out. Some stay up, but a lot of them come down after a quick listen.

We've had the Heil mic around here for about six months now, and we've used it in a lot of places we would have used an SM57 or even SM7 (most notably on snare drums and guitar amps). As far as I know, it's always made the cut and ended up in the mix.

The mic is extremely well-built and sturdy. It's a bit smaller (but longer) than an SM58 like an SM58's; and it screams. Go ahead and whack me with your drumsticks, but even if you're not Jon Brion, you can probably afford to check one of these out over yet another imported $99 large-diaphragm condenser.

Your link doesn't work.

How much do these mics cost? If it's cheap, I'll just buy one in a month or so hehe. Someday, I'm just going to buy up all the mics compared to SM57s in the price range and really figure out what's up. I hear too many different things that don't hold ground, and it doesn't all add up.

The Heil look nice but I've got better. I'll be using them if they send some free or pay me to use them.
