Is this right?????

Hey there. I just got a compressor, the FMR RNC(Really nice compressor) Now, heres my question. I want to add compression after I record a track. Do I have to run the track I want to compreesed out of my sound card, into the compressor, then out to the mackie to the sound card and record on to a new track with the compressed signal and then delete the old one?? Does this make sense?? The only way I can see it happening without going through so many A/D, and D/A conversions is to use the compressor while tracking. Anyways hope you can help...

Yes, that's right. Once the signal is digital, the only way to get an analog effect is to convert the signal to analog, apply the effect, then convert it back to digital.
This (especially with 16 bit sound cards) is a very bad thing to do to audio.

Sooooo, the only alternative is to use it while tracking (or get some reeeeeal good converters: 24bit, 96khz, near flat response)

Sorry I couldn't be of much help here. If you really want to use it, hunt around for some good DAC's, you might be able to get away with it (best of all with that method, you can record the original data at high end quality sound!!)
