I have a laptop which my son and wife seem to always be on. I have a work laptop but I don't want to load music programs on that. Is there a way for me to use something like reaper or audacity on a thumb drive and I would be able to save all my stuff on that and use it on both my home and work one without having to install on my work computer?

Actually, yes you can. Reaper for sure, not sure about audacity. Also the DAW called XT is specifically made to run from a flash drive.

You may have some residual stuff left on your main hard drive, but basically, just insatll the program on the thumb drive and you are good. You also will have to set the project files to the thumb drive and those can get pretty big. You probably can only work on 1 project and archive it to cd/dvd etc before starting another one. I would think a good 8 gig or even 16 gig thumb drive will work fine.

Yep, I'm sure you could load Audacity. Most applications without a license key should work, I think.
