Is THIS a horrible idea?

I am about to begin trying to make this room work better for mixing...Pretty much ONLY mixing. I may record vocals in here too, because I guess I want to deaden it alot. As you can see, I'm going to have my speakers in a closet with lots of clothes in it. I am going to treat the doors, the area behind the speakers, the ceiling outside the closet, the wall directly behind me. Is this a good idea, or is having the speakers in a closet going to mess with things? I seem to have a phase issue at around 50hz, the note becomes very faint.

Oh, excuse the blankets and stuff...I'm experimenting with anything I can get my hands on to see how it alters sound...I packed a bookcase with blankets and pillows and covered it in a tight sheet to see if it did anything for bass.

I think the speakers/monitors will over exaggerate with the bass frequencies when they're in the closet. They might produce much more bass...

Packing the closet with blankets & crap is a good idea, but put your mixing desk on the other side of the room from the closet.

That shouldn't be a problem once I get my monitors though...ROKIT RP5s. They don't go quite as low as the speakers I have in there. The main issue I am having right now is an issue with the bass in some songs disappearing when a low A is played. Not TOO much bass...Actually, quite a comfortable level of bass, but at 55-110-220hz, it seems to go byebye. This is, if I am not mistaken, evidence of a standing wave. The room is 10 feet from the door to where my guitars are, and 12 feet going the length of the room, 15 if you count the closet.

The reason you're not hearing one of the bass notes is because it's in a null. The dimensions of a room play a role in not only creating peaks in the bass response, but also valleys. The dimensions of the room can cancel some frequencies out. That's where using bass traps comes into play to even them all out and get rid of the peaks and valleys. If you can get your room to within +/- 6db along the "bass" frequency range then you're in good shape.

Do you know how to test your room's response?

I believe I do. Wouldn't I take the most sensitive mic I have and set it up to record generated tones at 85db? I know there's a program I can get. The thing is that I'm building a new PC, firewire interface (Firepod of 8pre) and monitors and the computer I have in there right now is from 1998. I can't test anything right now, heh. But I KNOW I need bass traps, and I'll be buying some regardless of how my room tests. The thing I'm not sure is how to set up diffusion/absorption patterns along my reflective walls. With all those blankets, the flutter I heard in the listening position was diminished ALOT and I could distinguish things much more clearly...I heard things in mixes that I hadn't before, and I always like that.

Ah, I dunno about changing my life, but it certainly made it seem less daunting. It's nice to see that all it takes to improve a room that much is the right materials in the right position. But 1600 dollars is more than I wanted to spend on this whole upgrade. I think I'll be making some bass traps soon to go along with my blankets. How's a bed work as a bass trap, btw? I've kinda gotta sleep in here and I don't know how comfortable mounting a trap in the corner where my bed is would be, or if it may overdo it. Especially since, due to lack of powertools to build them, I may have to fill garbage cans with rock wool and stick them in corners...Maybe I'll just do that in my closet or something and figure out a way to build proper ones.

You don't have to buy the real traps products to improve the response of your room. That video just rocks! It changed my life anyway... :)

Can't say I watched a video with a female in it. I didn't watch them all. But no, my wife is a total hottie and she's allz I need. :)

The video you told me to watch feature's his wife. And a...OH.

The video changed your life because you saw those hideous dolls of Ethan Winer and his life.

Oh, he must have changed the order of the videos and/or added one. The one you should watch is the one where him and his friend tune a control room with bass traps in the corners.
