Dolmite,
Yes, I did try it out against other mic. Not in the store, though. Stores are kinnda funny with having their mics be used unless you pay for them. I tried it against an Oktava (can't remmember the model but it's the black, squarish shaped one that they discontinued making recently). I beleive Guitar center had them on sale for $99. I also tried it against a
Shure SM58, SM57, and EV PL76. For vocal recording I noticed that the MXL1006 sounds warmer than the Oktava (by the way, I had both MXL1006 and Oktava connected to
a MP 105 tube pre-amp which gave them a nice sound). I favor the MXL 1006 better than the Shure SM57, SM58, and PL76 for vocal recording as well. For live vocal setting, SM58 still rule. For acoustic guitar recording MXL 1006 will do the job better than SM58, 57, and PL76. Although I noticed that I got a better, sweeter sound in recording my acoustic guitar using the MXL1006 and the SM57 together. Of course, I'm not a proffesional test person for these microphones and all my conclusions are based on personal prefferance. It shouldn't matter what the specs in the box says. They might all be just crap for all we care. It's the actual test of the unit and how it sound for what you need it for that counts. I admit, I was sceptical in buying the MXL1006 because it was new and I don't know much about the unit. But hey, for $80 bucks.... it didn't brake the bank. That's just the gamble I took. And a worthy gamble it was.
The unit did not come with any pop filter so that's one thing to consider. Or, if you guys don't mind the look, you can make one using a wire coat hanger and some nylon stockings. Anyway, these are just my opinions.
