Sammy's got this condenser on sale now at aforementioned price.
Is this mic any good for recording vocals! I've heard many pro's and con's on Marshall mics and would be interested in buying if it is worth it!

It looks quite similar to the MXL-V57 selling at marsmusic.com. Check back a couple days down in this forum for some audio samples of that mic. I just emailed Marshall for specs on these mics so hopefully that will reveal something. My guess is that these mics are pretty close (if not identical) in form and function to the MXL-2001P.

Hey Q,

I got a very quick reply from Wayne at Marshall:

Hi,
The MXL 1006 and V57 are very similar mics and are new, so not yet on the web. I have attached a brochure on the 1006. If you like price/performance of the 603, you will be blown away by the 1006.
MXL

I'd attach the .pdf brochure he sent me but it looks to be just over the size limit. I'd be glad to email it to you, just let me know. Anyway, the specs look quite similar to both the MXL-2001P and V67G, but the frequency response is a bit different, showing a bump at just under 3k, a gradual rise from 5-10k, and a roll off at 15k.

Well... I recentlly purchased the MXL 1006 from Sam Ash for $80 (special weekend sale). I must say, personally, I'm satisfied with the vocal recoding I got from the mic. I know a lot of people have negative things to say about this unit. I would rather have a Neuman or one of those $1000 range mic but for a starving-low budget musician (like me) this is a great deal and a good sounding mic.

In conclusion (drum rolls)..... I'm happy with it. :)

Damn, 80 bucks....I don't think I could have resisted that either. Did you happen to compare it to anything in the store (or compare to what you have at home) and if so, how did it fare? BTW, I know the MXL-V57 comes with a shockmount, was that also included with your 1006?

Dolemite,

Man, I'm VERY interested. I am in the market for my first large-diaphram condensor, to be used primarily for vocals, but like many here (alas) I don't have the green for much. I am very interested in seeing the brochure - my email is cave821@aol.com.

Fellas, where exactly can you buy this new Marshall?

Hey Fab,

I just emailed you the brochure for the MXL-1006. You can get the MXL-V57 at www.marsmusic.com or (presumably) Mars Music stores and the MXL-1006 at www.samash.com and it sounds like stratman got his from the Sam Ash store. BTW, I know for sure that the 57 comes with a shockmount, don't know about the 1006. But that's something to consider since they're both $100 (unless you're lucky enough to have one of these stores nearby and you can find the mics on sale) and Wayne at Marshall admitted they were at least "very similar." Anyway, have fun mic shopping and let us know what you get and how it works out!

Thanks Dolemite! I hope to order one of those in the next week - although I'd love to hear whether Harvey has anything to say about them.

I don't know.

I can't comment, because I haven't a clue as to what's different about the Mars or the Sam Ash models, if anything.

Doel,

at Mars, doesnt look like the 57 comes with the shockmount, but the 67 does......am I wrong?.....

Hell! It's gotta be better than a damn SM 58 at that price!

Dolmite,

Yes, I did try it out against other mic. Not in the store, though. Stores are kinnda funny with having their mics be used unless you pay for them. I tried it against an Oktava (can't remmember the model but it's the black, squarish shaped one that they discontinued making recently). I beleive Guitar center had them on sale for $99. I also tried it against a Shure SM58, SM57, and EV PL76. For vocal recording I noticed that the MXL1006 sounds warmer than the Oktava (by the way, I had both MXL1006 and Oktava connected to a MP 105 tube pre-amp which gave them a nice sound). I favor the MXL 1006 better than the Shure SM57, SM58, and PL76 for vocal recording as well. For live vocal setting, SM58 still rule. For acoustic guitar recording MXL 1006 will do the job better than SM58, 57, and PL76. Although I noticed that I got a better, sweeter sound in recording my acoustic guitar using the MXL1006 and the SM57 together. Of course, I'm not a proffesional test person for these microphones and all my conclusions are based on personal prefferance. It shouldn't matter what the specs in the box says. They might all be just crap for all we care. It's the actual test of the unit and how it sound for what you need it for that counts. I admit, I was sceptical in buying the MXL1006 because it was new and I don't know much about the unit. But hey, for $80 bucks.... it didn't brake the bank. That's just the gamble I took. And a worthy gamble it was.

The unit did not come with any pop filter so that's one thing to consider. Or, if you guys don't mind the look, you can make one using a wire coat hanger and some nylon stockings. Anyway, these are just my opinions.

Hmmm, I seem to remember seeing it listed on the Mars website for $99.99 with the shockmount a while ago. Looks like that deal is over. I dunno man.

stratman,

Thanks for the report. The Oktava is the MK219 I believe, and probably the obvious comparison at that price point. I was looking at the Oktava as well, but I'm thinking I'll either try out the MXL-V57 or 1006 or save my sheckles for the MXL-V67 which is on sale at Mars Music for $169 with the shockmount. BTW, did your MXL-1006 come with a shockmount?

I'm no gear snob, I've got an embriodery hoop pop filter!
