Here's what I use:

MDA
Digital Fish
KarmaFX

Those pretty much give you a complete set of plugins for free.

Whether or not they are of use to you (they are some what specialised application plugins) Steven Massey offers these free of charge: http://www.smassey.com/plugin.html

Another option is to buy FXPansion's VST wrapper and download freely available VSTs (there are many many of these, versus relatively few RTAS). This is quite a cheap option.

Dude, www.kvraudio.com links to ALL plugins. (and you can search for specific hosts and FREE ones...)

Should be the first place you start to look.

I agree here.

Whilst you are correct - and I think KVR is a great site, the plug-ins are still (like I said about the Massey plugs) somewhat specialised.

The truth is there's a reason you pay for decent plug-ins; it takes time and effort and sometimes investment to develop them. People want reimbursing for this. I believe it's also more difficult to code for RTAS than VST as the developer kit is not freely available, whereas the VST one is.

There's also the consideration that more host applications use VST. The majority of home users (the ones who will be looking for free plugins) are using these programmes - think Cubase, Reaper etc.

If you definitely want to use free Pro Tools plugins, I'd invest in the wrapper and then go forward from there. From memory it costs around £30.

Finally, as you are a student, there are some great discounts out there for software. Try speaking to some resellers to see what they can offer you.

thank you all very much in pointing me in the right direction! i used to use logic pro, but now upgraded my system to pro tools and cant use my old plugs....but i shall have a look at those sites, and check some online stores for student discounts!! i do really fancy the joe meek package, but i already have a vc3 in hardware! so if their not too processor hungry then i may invest first off.

Try speaking to shops in person. I've not found any decent online student discounts. I know that Waves do a student discount, but I can't find any info on it anywhere!

With Digidesign plugins, they usually have a 14 day demo period - provided you have an ilok. They also very often offer rental of plugins for various periods of time.

You can use the demo period in two ways: evaluate the product, see if it does what you want it to.

Secondly you can use the demos at times when you will be doing a specific project - a bit cheeky I know but it's playing the system.

McDSP offers some pretty good student discounts every once in awhile. If I recall, the project studio bundle of plugs (LE) for about $100 or so. Good quality stuff IMO and can't beat the price either.

Do post this up next time you see it!
