Is there a set of monitors and amp that everyone agrees is a good buy?

Studio Monitors

Hi gang:
I've read all your comments on the proper monitor systems for a studio. I just finished building mine with a 10' x 15' mixing room and a 8' x 8' sound booth. These are located in my third car garage with a huge double paine plexiglass angled window to the double car garage, where I can pipe in a full size band when neccessary.

Obviously, that's not a lot of room to put large monitors in, so I'm thinking of using something like a theater surround system such as Bose. You have only the one large bass speaker and all the others would be very small to fit in upper corners of each room.

I like the idea of the small speakers and they seem to have quite the punch these days.

Any other ideas in this area?

Yes --- it doesn't work. many many reasons.
For a start, you're talking about a custom surround system with a relatively high crossover point - so you won't have any idea what the low end of your mixes is doing.
Second - the decoders will route non-surround sound in a random frequency dependant manner.
Third - its really not a very good, and a hopelessly inaccurate system.
Fourth - I'd give you 2 weeks before you'd blow some speakers.
Fifth - If you'd do a mix on them, burn a CD and play it somewhere else, you'd go back to the studio, cover them with lighter fluid and set them on fire.
Sixth- monitors don't exist for nothing.
Seventh - its totally overprized crap.

sjoko, Hell yes and thanks for the tip. I'm glad I didn't go in that direction. It's not like I have alot of cash to burn. It took a great deal of money to build the studio in the first place. It's pretty cool, with 27 different lighting capabilities in the ceiling along with individually contolled colored track lighting. It's taken three years to build and I don't want to start making bad decisions now.

I been hearing about these NS10s. Who manufactrures them and do you think I can get them used.

Dude....you just turned your garage into what sounds like a full blown studio. It always amazes me what people will refer to as their "studio," but anyway, I'm guessing you've put a lot of time, effort, and money into your version of a studio and I just shudder to think that after all that you were going to put a surround system in for monitors - Bose no less! Honestly....where do people get their information...is that what they told you at Best Buy or some shit?

Yamaha makes the NS10s and (unfortunately) they discontinued the line, so getting them used is about the only way you can get them.

The object in designing the studio, was to allow me the luxury of getting up at maybe three oclock in the morning, if that's when the idea hits me, walk into the studio and flip the main breakers and everything would be as I left it the last time I was there. LIghting, recording mode and effects. I'm always getting ideas for new songs and the studio needs to be ready without setup required. Otherwise I loose the idea or it changes not to my liking.

I know that seems a little excentric, but thats me. I still need to find out about the NS10s.

But then you'll need an amp as well.

Alternative, have a look at something like JBL LSR25 or LSR12, depending on your budget

I just tried ebay and it shows no listing for them. does anyone have any other resources for used Yamaha NS10s? That's my next step.

After that, I'm going for a some kind of amp system to drive the monitors.

Any suggestions?

I just bought a pair of KRK's and a Hafler amp.They seem to have a nice flat sound and they have a built in crossover.I spent about $565 for the monitors and amp including tax.

It's funny to hear Tekker say that NS10s are discontinued and then sjoko2 pointing you where they're sold. What's the scoop?

The manufacture has been discontinued, resellers have bought quite a load of stock.

On a slightly different note, here's what I often see:

NS10M for 320$ a pair
NS10MC for 480$ a pair
NS10MS for 370$ a pair

Do you know the difference between them? I personally can't tell from the Yamaha website (which talks about the last two models only, no word about a cheaper version).
