I never thought about that. I wonder if they did it on purpose or if the tape machine just wasn't aligned (or whatever the adjustment is called) properly.

My only "analog" experience is with my Tascam portastudio!

Thats usually just due to the tape speed being changed on mixdown. I would bet money the song was recorded in the A-440 version of C.

I mean as opposed to a proper note on a keyboard tuned to a-440

Ooooh. The idea that only notes tuned to a 440 Hz reference are "proper" is totally alien to me.

Most instruments run at A-440 don't they?

No. But whne you play together, you need to establish a common tuning, and then 440 Hz is most common, yes.

Anyone else find songs with a full band that aren't in a "proper key?"

Oh, sure, all the time. I quite often try to pick out the chords to different songs, and very often you'll find that they are recorded with a reference other than 440. Not unusual at all.

If it's due to the tape speed being changed, or because they actually tuned the instruments to A=434 or something really makes no difference. It's principally speaking exactly the same thing.

A 440 is just the current flavor. It has risen over time and currently orchastras tune to 460. In given time 460 will likely replace 440 for popular recording.
