Is there a flaw in Ebay's feedback system?

I always use the eBay system of communication, not regular email, so there's a virtual paper trail they can look at.

One lesson learned, always use paypal or some other system to pay...

I paid for a Tascam DA-38 last year by money order because I wanted the payment to get to the person next day, not after the 4 days that paypal takes to withdraw money from a checking account... It was shipped to me, and it started eating tapes out of the box. I contacted the seller, who had an extremely high number of positives (1500-2000 + sales, and like... 2 negative over his entire sales career).

Email communication had been swift when everything was going well (I'd email and get a reply within hours every time). The second I emailed the person saying "Hey - this thing is eating tapes, can we arrange a return, as your listing said?", no response. No response for 7 days! By the 6th or 7th day, i figured he was a no-show, so I gave him bad feedback and figured I'd cut my losses, move on.

Hours later, I see he gave me negative feedback, saying I didn't give him enough time to respond! Now, if he had been gone for a week, fine - but he had been completing sales within the time that he was ignoring me, so I'm assuming he was around.

I then responded and said "Ok - we can do feedback retraction if you will allow me to send you the item and I get my money back". Never heard from him again, I was out 350 bucks, and I had negative4 feedback saying I was too quick on the draw, and no one from here on out that sees that in my profile is going to know the whole story.

Oh well - guess I learned to deal with paypal so that in most matters, I can get my money back if someone screws me.

It also occurs to me, Ive had the retaliation happen before as well.

I sold a small mixer on ebay a year or two ago, and after the sale went smoothly, I got negative feedback saying the item wasn't as described (when in fact it was described down to the last detail, mostly info from the manufacturer's website). I responded with whatever retort I could, "Buy did not read sale, yada yada", but of course it doesn't matter.

A couple weeks later, I had put up a couple of other items, two other small mixers, a mic and a snare drum.

Someone high-bids every one of those items who has no feedback rating, and then they start sending me crazy emails after they don't pay. "Item not as described!" "Item not what I need!", etc etc. Perhaps it was just a coincidence, but I doubt it. Again, left that username bad feedback, but what does it matter, its a dud name that he doesn't care about, but now I have 4 negative seller feedback postings. oy.

Most definitely! And the assholes who run ebay could care less. I listed an item and the ebay servers failed 2 hours before the end of the auction, so I decided to terminate the auction. One of the bidders left me a neg feedback even though there had been NO TRANSACTION of any kind. Not even a winning bidder since the auction had been terminated early. Ebay won't remove it. They are assholes and I quit dealing with them. Craigslist is what I use now. It works just as well for the things I sell. Fuck ebay in the ass!

No transaction occurred and you got a negative from someone who didn't even win the auction? I don't know how that's possible...?

A transaction has to take place before you can even post feedback, so that sounds fishy.

Hey I've got an Ebay question in a little different direction. There are some smart Ebay'ers here that should know..

Is there a way to set up a private listing on Ebay? If I find a seller on a classifieds forum like GS or HR/BBS with a low post count but happens to have excellent feedback on Ebay, can we set up a private sale on Ebay? That way you could have the benefit of the Paypal security.

I have the feeling this will be a big "NO". But it's worth a try.

Are there any other ways to similarly perform a secure transaction? I know there is Escrow and all that, but just wondering if there's anything quicker and easier.

You can just do the deal through Paypal, simple as that!

IIRC, it's called a private auction. Yes, I'm pretty sure you can do it. No, I don't know how. :D

One quick and dirty way is to make a listing that no one would ever bid on but the other guy could find, and a Buy It Now for the agreed to price. Don't forget to figure in your eBay, PayPal, and shipping fees. The listing might look like:

Title: Guitar

Description: Guitar, six strings.

Well, if I just send someone money via paypal for an item, Paypal isn't going to just refund my money if the item isn't received.. Am I missing something?

Good idea actually.

I'd like to hear more about this if anyone knows. I set up a little mock listing to see if I could see an option for this, but didn't. But I could very well be missing something.

Somewhere there's an option to limit who can bid on an item by name. I've only done that once, though, and it's been a while.
