Reading the thread on the fethead versus cloudlifter I saw that the fethead requires a good source of phantom power to sound good. so I was wondering if I'm going to buy the fethead whether or not my scarlett 8i6 interface has good enough phantom power to run the Fethead. As well my setup is right now is an SM7B into I my Scarlett interface into my PC. Do you guys think I could really benefit from either the fethead or the cloudlifter. Or is it not going to be that much of a difference? The Scarlett interface was rated one of the quietest interfaces to use with An SM 7B by recording hacks.com right below the maudio c400

I can't imagine that the 8i6 would have any difficulty in providing sufficient power for the Fethead. The Fethead should not be that different, in terms of power requirement, from a condenser microphone.

Given that the Fethead provides about 20dB of gain, you would expect that you would not need to turn up the gain so high on the 8i6. This could be an advantage if the gain pot is a bit "twitchy" at maximum gain, or if the preamp is noisy at high gain.

In reality, you will probably be better off just trying either a Cloudlifter or a Fethead. If you can try before you buy, do it.

I've talked to a few people that have had problems with the Fetheads. Picking up radio frequencies, inconsistent performance, etc... I think this may be why they now offer a broadcast (shielded) model. It's now more expensive than the Cloudlifter CL-1 and is still in a cheap housing. Plus, the Cloudlifters are already shielded. Not sure why anyone would pick the broadcast version over a CL-1.

As long as you have Phantom Power Required and something supplying that phantom power youl be safe
